THE GREAT CHAI SAVER Street • IS Neat If there is still a ny doubt am ong you faithful readers that the street is neat and dirt bikers are all a bunch Qf nerds, then the land use hassles that are going on s hould finally convince you of your misguided loyalties. - I mean , really. Here are a few sleazy bureaucraps turning your riding areas in to desert preserves for the brown and yellow upended packrat, and all you do is load your bikes into you r trailers and tuck your tails in the shady spot under the yellow streak and run . Typical dirt bik er mentality. A few yea rs back the bureaucraps in Washington came up with an idea th a t all bikers should wear helmets. Their th inking was somewhat along the lines of dirt biker nerds. When you fall down , the helmet will save you. The only big di fference is street bikers don't fall down like their dirt biker counterparts. And as it tu rns out, besides th e uncomfortable feeling a skid lid gives you , it also cuts down your riding abilities . On the dirt you don't have to watch out for cars and th ings. On the street you need all your senses tuned in as fine -as possible. When you r vision and you r hearing is im p aire d , you a re liable to end up as a hood orn a ment on a Mack truck , a definite deterent to hea lth . The street b ikers got off th ei r dead butts, put down their Coors cans, hopped on th eir scoots a nd rode to the ir representatives. Now , I've heard th e nerds in the dirt b ike end of this game say that th e dirt bikers d on 't ha ve the credib ility, or lea dership needed to figh t th e off-road closu res . W ell , I want you to t hi nk a minute. Have you seen some of the street bikers? T hey'r e not exactly wha t you want your mother to spe nd time with. But that d idn't stop them . Not at all. They banded toge ther , a nd aft er abou t a yea r of concentrated effort they managed to reverse the federal regu lation requ iri ng helmets . In three months , half the states in the co untry drop pe d the helmet la w. Of co urse, st ree t bike rs are a lot sma rte r t han ' dirt b ik ers . T h e y managed to put aside a nice Sunday putt in order to go on a helmet law protest eyery once in a while . Dirt bikers jus t ca n' t m anage that , ca n th ey? If th ere are any d irt typener ds ou t there who wou ld like to know wh at it really takes to bea t the bu rea ucr a ps a t Jtheir own game , I will be glad to pass on th e secrets lea rn ed by th e neat street rid ers. Inter ested ? Then rea d next week's leg -wetting issue of Cy cle Ne ws. I will lay it a ll ou t for you then . Until th en remember, st reet is ne a t; you get hurt in th e d irt.
