It was just challenging enoug h for the "A " and "B " riders to have to move rig ht along to keep on time, but no t so fast that the "C" riders were continually lat e. The last check of the first loop , loea ted just three miles from the finish , caught quite a few riders early. The check before had careless riders thinking it was "free" time all the wa y in to the finish. Fred Hayes (H on) misread his roll chart and paid th e price. Ouch , two points! The second loop soon dispelled all doubts on how tough it was going to be . Many riders were late to the first check. The Prospectors spent many weekends in the area scouting new trails and doing a good job of tying in old ones for a very challenging, interesting cou rse. Former Desert Number O ne A.C. Bakken was doing well until tr a ns m ission problems o n hi s automatic forced him into pu shing to the fini sh line . T he chec k was located three miles furth er allowing th e rid ers who werebeh ind in the section tim e to catch up . Number One H eavywe ight Gary Woodling decided to try the 175cc class for 1978 so went out and bought an IT 175 and was do ing pretty good until a fla t tire slowed him down. He just hung it up and took a shortcut ba ck to the pits. The cou rse was well marked , and all checks and m ileages seemed to be spot on. There was onl y on e protest. Mark Heacox had his card marked wrong at one check, and it indicated he was nine minutes earlyl Luckily the checkers remembered him . Club Referee Punk W ilson straightened things out much to Mark's relief, and he ended up fourth overall, first A O pen on his C&J-frame XL-410 Ho nda. Mark bought a new 390 Husky but didn't have enough m iles on it to try and ride it yet . Mayb e he'll reconsider after doing so good 011 the thumper. Number One 175cc Dave Matus also switched classes an d rode his 250cc KTM. Da ve broke his spe ed o and whe n teammate John T ownsend (400 KTM ) fell o n a do wn hill , Da ve tho ugh t he was lat e and burned th e next che ck by two m inutes. Mike Go d fr ey (Mai) and Rick Mu nyon (Ho n) both had the course zeroed until th e last chec k j ust before the finis h when they under estim a ted the dis tance down the hill into the check and both were a minute late. Just past the check the Prospectors had a 2.4- mi le reset. At the six mph average , that wo rked out to 24 minutes. Since the distance into the finish was just .3 miles past t he rese t, ma ny . r id e rs ro de into th e fin ish without thi nking. They could on ly be up to, 15 minutes early. Ma n y were over that , resulti ng in d isqu alifica tion . Looks of disbelief when so inform ed crossed th e faces of t he unlucky riders; Larry W oodruff wa s on e o f th e un fortunates.
