Super Seer Offers $30,000 in '78 Fast Guys Sign with Super Seer The west coast dirt track racing season is just around the corner; But there's nothing firm yet concerning the number of AMA nonNational professional events that will actually take p la c e to allow the N o vi ce a n d Junior riders to earn ad vancement points. A dvancement " • pomts, obviously, are a necessity for our upcoming riders to become Expert Pros and thus become eligible for t~e ~MA Grand Natio~al Championship/Camel Pro Series events. - For close to 20 years , California or Arizona riders could look forward to Ascot opening a nd running weekly from April to October. This year , tentative plans call for a five-week series of half mile races on Friday nights, starting April 7. But what new rider wants to wait that long to go racing and start picking up points? So, Florida might be the answer. Now for riders except California and Arizona racers, just the idea of going racing in Florida sounds great. You get out of the cold and snow , walk on the beach and all those ot hr good things that happen to you if you live in the frozen north. From about March 4 through the 14, Florida is hosting some good events on the mile , half mile and short tracks. Novice , Junior and Expert riders who ju st want to be dirt trackers and not road racers can compete in at least four or five money and pointspaying events without having to travel more than a few miles , once you get to Florida . The first one takes place on Saturday night, March 4 under the lights at a harness racing track located between Daytona and Orlando. This is for Expert and Junior riders and selected southeastern Novice entrants. Any west coast Expert or Junior can ride. but not western Novices. The last time they raced bikes on this track was in 1946. The next day, Sunday, March 5, it's a daytime half mile just outside of Daytona . Again , any and all west coast Expert and J unior riders can run but the Novice class is open only to south east Novices. Friday and Saturday nights are Expert/Junior affairs. . . . Often overlooked by N~vlce nders, IS that you can compete In both the Amateur road races on Wednesday, March 8 at the Speedway and also run later in the week in the Novice 250cc road races, if you want. The Amateur road races have sizes and classes for everybody, so finding a machine to run on the infield short course should not present too much of a problem . On e year a young west coaster came down , went to one of the local shops , borrowed a street bike , and went home with a trophy! The west coast Junior crop has slowed down as far as big numbers advancing each season to Expert. This was largely due to lack of weekly racing at Ascot. Now they have three different types of dirt track events to gain 80 points in about a week. The night mile is well lighted and should be fast. Look for some sand in the surface - everyt hing has sand in the surface in Florida. No entry fee is required if you post by Feb. 6. Mile info is availab le by calling 813 /5221513 or 305 /831 -1140. It will be the only mile until the San Jose opener on May 7 which is all Expert. plus a western Junior Invitational. The mile, by the way, is located off Interstate 4, between state roads 434 and 436 . It's called Seminole Harness Raceway. The Daytona half mile is a short, fast , well-oiled surface oval which was won last year by short tracker Guy McClure, who got a good start on his 750 and was pushed all the way to his only half mile win of the year. By the time the Florida events roll around , ].C. Agajanian should have his Ascot half mile plans confirmed for April and May so now is the time to decide when and how you want to go racing. For just the regular old fan who may be heading for Florida early, Delta Airlines has a direct discounted flight from Los Angeles right to Orlando, which is a short drive from Daytona. In fact it's another of those discounts we talked about in an earlier column but forgot to mention . Broc Glover a n d Chuck Sun, two of the fastest rising stars in the country, have signed contracts to u se Super Seer XR 500 gogglcs in all '78 !\IX events, Broc h ad a very good yea r in 1977 . His main concentration was in the 125 Nationals, where h e became the National Champion in that class. Chuck, on the other hand , was consistent in all events. He placed IOth in the '77 SuperCross Series, 9th in the 125 National points, 8th in the 250 National points, 12th in the 500 National points andculminated the season by winning the TransAm support class championship. Both Riders look forward to 1978 with enthusiasm as they both have factory rides. Broc will continue on the Yamaha Team, wh ile Chuck moves lip to • factory status with Husquarna. Watch for these young lions this year.
