Reduce AMA Board by one For the past three years. I served as a Trustee of the AMA . To set th e ru mors aside. I am not going awa y mad . I am just going away. There are pressing business reasons and I feel I can do more for the AMA as an ordinary "A" member than as an industry representative . My resignation offers the AMA a unique opportunity. I wou ld u rge th e members to take advantage of th e fact that th e Board is now sm aller by one person and leave it that wa y. T here is . no need to keep adding me mbers to an already cumbersome governing body. There is. how ever. an even greater opportunity that will a ffec t all members in a ll classes. I re fer to the position of President of th e AM A . The President will be chosen Feb. 20. I u rge all of you to support Roger Hull . of Road Rider magazine . to fill that post . Please bear with me for a few moments and read on . Ro ger Hull has credibility. T he road rider segment of the market needs attention a nd recognition. Roger Hull . having spen t the past yea r as a Boa rd member. can address that problem. I have d iscussed this with Roger and although he is not anxious to take on th e awesome responsibility, I know he will serve (by the way , the job pays nothing) even though he will have to give up some of the responsibility of runni ng his own magazine. If you are a member of the AMA and agree or d isagree wit h m e , you have your chance to make your views known. Class " B" mem bers can attend th e meeting Februa ry 20 in Cincinna ti . Ohio. Class A me m bers can contact their A representative on th e Boa rd or send a letter di rectly to the AMA . Box 14 1. Westerville. O hio 4308 1. Mot orcycling has some serious p roblems. By Charles Clayton SAN DIEGO , CA . FEB . 1 and 2 1 lA N Would you pay $15 for a 7-mile trail ride? Me neither. usually, but this was the first southwest "Off-Highway Motorcycle Work· shop" sponso red by th e Mo torcycle Industry Council. The four japanese factories provided playbikes , and some 35 bureaucrats. park planners , ana land managers from the western states met and coughed up the ante to listeD and learn all th e good and bad th ing; about our cu rious form of fun. T he professional worriers told us what they were worried about. ~, This was the second such "workshop" promoted by Gaml Nichol es, MIC's new people planner consultant. The firs t was iri Utah las: year. MIC ha s discovered the existence of a hitherto unheard of species - tlie " Recrea tion al Playbiker." This is1 tlie person who uses a dirt bike as a mean; of access to other outdoor pasttimes, such as sightseeing, rockhounding , fishing, huntin g , camping, etc . Cycle N ews call s it " bi kep ac king ." MI C would like to hel p th e recreatio n planners p rovide for this kind Cl activi ty. in ad di tion to the long. awa ited ORV parks an d trai ls. O ne thing the ou tin g did . it seemed to in fect a few dozen potential trail bikers with wha t has been ca lled "the motorcycle dise ase ." Most of the quest ions were on the order of, "how m uch d oes one of these nift y little motorcycles cost?" and wh at options are availa ble? Perhaps next the ind ustry sho iild put on a "T ra il Test Ride" for a ll the citizens who m ight have thought they wou ld like trail biking. but never Iia'd a chance to try it. •
