LaPorte repassed Bell after a slick m ove out of the mud , but Bell fought back. On the last lap , La Porte went DNF. As the ch eckers flew, th e final order read Tripes , Staten . Weinert . Bell and Bob Elli ott. SOOcc Pro Rex Staten was definitely th e man to beat among the 500 cc Pros. taking total control of the first qualifier from sta rt 10 finish. His win . however , was far from ea sy as the m onoshock on the Bassett Racing Products Yamaha failed . Parry Kla ssen brought in second foll owed by Chris Chaffee , Daniel W aller , Val T arnietti and Mark White . Taking top hon ors in th e second elimination m ot o was Mike Bell. Wayne Boyer too k the ea rly lead but co u ld n't hold off Bell and sett led for second. Bob Marin o , Du ane Joice , Scott Miller and J immy Weinert follow ed . Darrell Shultz ca me back after gett ing a taste of the - m ud in his qualifier to take the cons olat ion . T erry Clark. after leavi ng h is Can -Am for a Ma ico , too k seco nd plac e . Luc Messer , David Gerig and St eve Bau er were next to transfer int o the main. From the holeshot to th e chec kered flag , Rex St at en to ta lly do mina ted the 500cc Pr o fin al. As the 30-ride r field rounded th e first turn , Mike Bell su ffe red an other horrible start. Da rr ell Shultz became th e on ly man capab le of challenging Sta ten for the lead . but the Rocket was 100 hot. Bell pu sh ed from m id -p ack to fou rt h by the th ird lap and slid by T amietti on the next time around . / Stat en was pull ing an eno rmous lead th a t ke p t Shultz a nd Bell on th e gas . As Staten ca me in front of his m ech anic on th e eig hth la p he fra nt ica lly began pointing to his cycle 's rea r end. With on ly four laps lef t. Shultz began closing. Bell a lso sta rt ed closing ground on Shultz. With no d amping in the brok en rea r suspension (h is third of th e d ay), Stat en had 10 use every th ing he knew to hold off Shultz. As the two crested the last 'steep d ro p-off and m ade a da sh for the flag . Staten barely kept his ac hing m achin e in fro nt' of Shu ltz. Bell foll owed in th ird wit h Pa rry Klassen a dis ta nt fourth and Terry Clark fifth. 125cc Pro Yama ha 's Bro c Glover and Suzuk i rider Bri an Myerscough m at ched heads in th e l25cc Pr o battle. nec k and neck a ll day, neither letting up. The first qu alifier bel onged to Glover wit h "C assin ' Ca ylon " Mosier right on his heel s. Mike Tripes brought in third with T in Locey .a nd N ea l Snarr following. Marty T ri pes slipped in th e last direct transfer spot at l Oth . T aki ng the secon quali fier was DG's Dave T aylor . T a ylor grabbed th e holes hot with Myerscough right on his fenders. A hard get -off sent Myersc ough way back , a nd into th e consi. Jeff Ward took second a hea d of Gary Denton , Bob by Jones , Mark Lawrence and Pete W anket. Danny Turner qualified eig hth . With a 58-second lead , Myer scough made the consolation rac e look like practice. ' S t e~e Davis and Pat Hubbs followed. At th e d rop of th e fina l gate. Dave T aylor pulled a no t her holesh ot. Glover. Randy Hess and Myerscough were right behind and th ey came around for the complet ion of th e first lap. Glover had taken over first. Hess was running second but dropped back.
