In memorium: Larry Carpenter We wish to express our thanks to Yamaha Motor Corpora tion and all the other companies associated with the motorcycle industry who offered , their sympathy over the loss of Larry Carpenter. Their concern and help was a great source of comfort to the family during this time of sorrow. We 'll all miss Larry very mu ch, but it is heartwarming to kn ow just how many friends he had . THE FAM ILY OF LARRY CARPENTER Bellflower, CA CMC Criticism Hataahita . Donna Gaba rd . Ty pography, The CMC Golden State Series is perhaps the most poorly organized race series in history. The Saddleback race, Jan. 8, was a royal burn. The gate fees were increased, races we~e four laps long, some races were run In the dark and some races never even ran. This late-starting. ill-run and poorly promoted event , th e entry fees were raised a nd the rnot os short ened . The second event was mercifully rained out. More time. please I have been to many AMA 0 ·36 races this year and it has been the same story at most of the races: Lack of laps or time per moto! Being a local CN correspondent, I've discussed th is problem with many riders in the Expert, Amateur , and Novic e classes , and they seem to agree that this is th e main problem. We ' as riders are spending around $2,000 -2 ,500 to try to advance ourselves to the Pro level of motocross while we get a limited time to race . One of the reasons we have so few 0-36 Pros winning big races is that they are not p repared both physically and mentally. Lots of good , talented racers have quit because of th is reason . I realize there are more riders than ever a nd the promoter is going to much more expense than ever, but we, the rid ers, are getting shafted for it . We Novices and Amateurs spend all day at the races just for 20 ·30 minutes of riding time including p ractice. I'm aware in Southern California some (I don't know about all ) races offer plenty of racing time to all classes. Why couldn't there be some deal for Minis and 100s to race on another track in the area , or have an all-Novice race on Saturday and an all-Amateur and Ex pe rt race on Sunday, say once a month on a trial basis. All of us must get together with the promoters and think of some: solutions or motocross will slowly die out in our a rea. Remember, motocross was originally an ability and en du rance sport, not a short 10 minute sp rint. AN DY MED IN Sacram ento , CA Four stars Don Lem aster gets four stars (my highest rati ng) for the article on Rob bers' Roost . Neat article. I don't know about your other readers, but I like that kind of stuff. Where did he get a completely stock 1970 OT-I ? I didn't th ink th ere were any of th ose left . TIM ELLIOTT Checkpoint M.C . Editor All of us at Mountain High Int ern atio nal would like to express our sincere regret . at having to cancel our CMC / Suzuki Golden State Series race on January 15. We were prepared for a normal rain . not the torrential downpour that came so unexpect edl y that weekend . We want to thank the large number of riders and fam ilies that were so very understanding of ou r decision to cancel. Only a handful were not so kind , complaining abou t the money spent to travel to ou r track. We can't control th e weather , and these few people ha ve no idea of th e time, effort and money put into a ra ce that was literally washed a way. We asked for a not her da te on the CMC series and were tu rne d d own . Judging from th e respo nse of th e rid ers wanting to rac e at Mountain High , th is was a very unfortunate and unfair decision. We are sorry we won't be allowed to participate in the ser ies. However, we are planning a big purse rac e on Feb . 26 under AME sanction. We hope you will a ll plan to attend. Flyers will be mailed and Cycle News will have more information . Please call Mountain High at 209 1 291 -8793 and let us kn ow what you would like us to do about your ent ry fees. Again , we thank you so much for your understanding a nd patience.
