About one minute later Kelly arrived with about a three minute lead over Malocco. Later, Lambson came in with M. Lee and a hard -cha rging Beisner in for sixth overall. Perkins was in next , the first Amateur title after an excellent comeback charge. Mike Martin also played the catch up game today finishing just ahead of Dunca n ' and Allen . Eleventh overall was Tim Nething , just a hea d of Mark Moulett. both finishing firs t and second 250cc Amateur respectively. Back a t fo u rteen th overall , Al Wurtzel once again ma n uvered his Cycle Prod ucts W est KT M to victory leading the 250cc Junior/Senior class fro m start to fin ish . First Lightweight was Mike Johnston on a IT 175 Yam aha. Johnston too k the win after Plant got off hard nea r the finish and was unabl e to finish. Sec o nd Li gh t weig h t was A mateur Mike Easley who started off with a good bomb ru n to dom inate his class. Jeff Ca n non . on a 250cc H usky, was the eventual winner of the Novice class after Chris Duncan , who'd led most of the way . got off an d had to replace his chain. Richard Hughes was th e man to beat in the Senior Beginner class with an outstanding start and a first place finish . . The course was more challenging than usual and was enjoyed by nearly everyone. Visi bility was outrageous and pit crews had no problem spotting their riders. This race was held close to the Rand Mountains because California City would not grant a perm it to use their land. However, a grant was given to race on BLM property. Charlie Welk . breaking in a new 400 Suzuki . led by a minute at the end of the first 23 miles. H owever, Welk overshot his pit and had to back track to fill the tiny motocross gas tank . Ke p ha rt flew by , tailed by Greg Meyers and Mike Stearns. Going full - Scot Duncan fan well at CRC until "endo-itus" set in. bore into a corner, Stea rns cut to the inside and passed Meyers . Going into the third loop - still no dust - Kep ha rt was holding his lead with Welk on his tail. Welk had to pit again , letting five riders by. At check three on the final loop, Kephart still led with Welk and Stearns side by side for second when Stearns' gearbox locked up and broke th e chain. That put Greg Meyers and Don Mathews into a battle for third with Steve Kephart and Paul Eddy having it out behind them. Kephart continued in the lea d , with Welk (first Open Expert) finishing a close second. Mathews took third and first 125cc Expert. Meyers was fourth. ,_Steve Kep ha rt fifth and Eddy sixth. There was a good turnout in the 125cc Novice class , where Rick Troyer took top honors. .Bru ce Corn ell won the Senior class . • Results inResults Section.
