Team Honda's Brad Lackey dominated the Open Pros. Shultz who re covered from a fr igh teni ng start crash in th e first Open Pro moto that sent a spect at or to the hospital. Danny Turner, likewise, won via a two-rnoto swee p. New Moto-X Fox team member Donnie Cantaloupi took second with a 5·2 score. Saddleback winner Br ian Myerscough was third. T u rn er took the point lead in th e 125cc Pro class. Promoter Di on ran all the Sportsmen on Saturday. all owing for a full day of Pro ra cing. The 125 and 250 cc class es ran th ree qualifiers (eigh t tr a nsfe r red ou t of each) a n d two consola tion motos (fou r from each) to make up 32 ·man fields . Two 30 · minute motos were run in ea ch class for the money. Open Pro Tim Worth. riding a Maico, grabbed the first moto holeshot , but the race was red -flagged after a bad crash on the downhill follo wing the start. According to Darrell Shultz, one of those involved , "A couple of gu ys tried to sandwich me . I should have shut off, but I thought I could make it between them." The tangle occurred near the snow fen ce on the left side of the track and bikes went through the fenc e . A woman specta to r was hit and taken to th e hospital , where she was later rel eased after treatment of a scalp la cer ation. Shulu was run over by several bikes. and though he spent 15 minutes on the ground . shook it off and made the restart. Honda's Warren Re id was involved as well, and he too was shaken up . Both riders dropped out of the ra ce after only a few laps. Shultz came back in th e 250ccs. Reid called it a day. Mike Bell. whose heel was hit : sha r p ly b y a n ot her bike on the outskirts of the mel ee , grabbed th e holeshot on the restart with Lackey close behind. Brad shot past less than halfway through th e first lap and was never challenged afte r that. Shultz go t a good sta r t. but dropped back steadi ly befo re d ropping out. Stat en ca me up quickly to pass Bell a few laps into the ra ce , and Can-Am's T erry Clark d id likewise a cou ple of la ps later . . Bell fou nd his pace and repassed Clark to occu py th ird for th e rest of th e way . Ma ico -rnounted Dan W all er rou nd ed out the top five. Staten led the pack .off the start in the second moro with Maico rid er Pa rry Kla ssen and Lackey in his wake. Staten kept the lead for a few laps. but Lackey just wore h im down . passed him and sta rted pulling four-to seven seconds a lap (according to Buchka's pit board) . Bell moved u p from a top 10 start to third, lead ing Kla ssen and Clark . The mota finished with Lackey a go od d istance in front of Staten who had a good lead on Bell. Klassen finished fourth a he ad of Cla rk , but lost ou t to the Can-Am rider by one point for fou rt h overal l. 250cc Pro Staten rocketed quickly into th e lead of the first moto. As the order stabilized. Shultz was in second and Danny " Magoo" Chandler third. Shultz and Staten won their qualifying races . and the winner of the third. Mike Bell , elected to sit out th e 250cc race when he was unable to walk on the heel that was banged up in the first Open rnoto. Behind Magoo , Maico riders Dennis Brand and Randy Losh were having a go at fourth . Pos itions remained stable until the last lap. Chandler, who had gotten off at least once before, crashed on a muddy downhill turn and was passed by Brand and Losh. Magoo nailed the second moto start . but Staten zapped him before the first lap was over. Chandler stayed with th e Rocket . passing him back on the second lap, but it was only fo r a brief moment before Staten took the lead for good . Shultz passed Chandler a few laps later, but never challenged Staten. Magoo seemed to have a lock on third , but fell in a tight corner and was hit by another rider . H e got back up , but his thumb was hurting badly. a nd he fell a lap behind. Brand had worked his wa y by Do nnie Hansen's Yamaha , and he fin ished th ird with Hansen fourth . Staten. Shultz and Br and took the top three overall spots. with Hansen (7 ·4 ) and Milan Ga rrett (6-7) fo llowi ng. 125cc Pro Magoo Chandler ' exchanged his KTM for a 125cc Suzuki and went to th e front of the pack, passing Jeff Ward who took the holeshot. Danny Turner. ridi ng a Gene Montgomery sponsored , AI Coulard-tuned Yamaha , was in second. The two of Thi s dance is known as the "High Side Two-Step ." them were building a big lead on the rest of the pack when Chandler threw his chain. He waved as T urner went by. fixed the chain and took off in second. Behind the two Northern Californians . Mark Lawrence and Donnie Cantaloupi had a spirited race going for th ird . Lawrence finally pulled some space on Cantaloupi, who was joined by Moto-X Fox team mate Pat R ichter , back for the first tim e following an injury-induced la yoff. Richter, riding a Yamaha because his Suzu k i wasn 't r eady . passed Cantaloupi just before th e end of the rnoro to take fourth . Da vid Taylor's Suzuki led the second moto off the line, but the d amping was gone from his shocks. and h e crashed trying to hold off Turner. Bobby Jones' Su zuk i moved into secon d with Cantaloupi a nd Pe te Wanket behind him. Ca ntaloupi and Wanket passed Jones and began their own battle Cant aloupi , the CMC -N o r t h champion . and Wanket . the Southern C al iforn ia 125cc t it le - h older. Canta loupi eventuall y triumphed and grabbed second overall . W anket had a poor first moto; he got stuck in a muddy corner and event u a lly finished 20th. His th ird-place fin ish in the other was good for 10th overall . Law rence dropped out of the race after a poor start and a mudhole p ile up left him near-last . The Crown Cycle rider was clearly upset over the second rnoto start. A rubber band sta rt was used, since the ground was not dry enough to pour concrete for a metal gate. Riders were warned to stay behind a ribbon, but in the 125cc start, the ribbon was broken. Officials hoped to ca tch the riders by surprise and released the band before the ribbon was put back. Richter was having chain problems when the stock sw ingarm started flexing and throwing the chain. Several times, he charged back into the fray . only to have' the chain come off again. Brian Myerscough , the Saddleback winner, ended up th ird overall on his Suzuki with a good come-from-behind ride to seventh in the first moto after having problems with the mud .
