NATIONAL ' PAPERS What better way to open the new AMA Grand N ational/Cam el Pro racing season than with a couple of tips on how you can go to the Houston Nationals on Feb. 3-4 or to Daytona for Motorcycle Speedweek on Mar. 6-12. Ho usto n fea tures the Frida . . y night Na tional TT a nd the Sa tu rday night National Sho rt T rac k . plus a mo torcycle show. Anybody who fli.es. down and back on Cont inent a l' AIrli nes can save some money. Contine ntal is one of the few ai rlines that offers three classes of service: First class , coa ch and economy. The economy tic ket is the one. You sit in the same place as coach p asse ngers , but you pay less. You don't get anything to eat , but who ·has to eat when the flight is three hours or less? For Daytona there are at least two airlines that can save Westerners a bundle. Eastern Airlines flies out of Los Angeles Interna tion al , and they also list Seattle so the good folks in the Northwest also have a shot a t what looks like th e best deal ever offered , if they plan ahead , like now. Eastern offers a program that could fly you from Los Angeles or Seattle down to Dayton a , Miami , Bermud a , the Caribbean and Pu erto Rico - to name just a few sp ots for less than $300 . There are , of co u rse, a few requirements: There must be at least two people. You must be gone at least s.even days. You also have to m ake your reservations abou t · a month a head , and Da yton a is about that far off. I T his one lu m p price actually sa ys you can fly any place that Eastern lands, make as many stops as you wa nt and not be gone longer than 45 days. The reason that I have poi nted out thes e things is that over the years th e cost of flying to Houston a nd Daytona h as more th an d ou bl e d . A I0 t 0 f goo d rac e fans have wanted to go to these events, but the cost of flying was too much and it was too time-consuming to drive Let 's' add one more Da ytona discount for the western fans . National Airlines has a lat e night flight from Los Angeles, a quick change in Tampa and on in to Daytona by seven in the morning. You can save close to $100 by flying the nigh t coach both wa ys a nd, like Ea stern , they take you right into Da ytona . . . A lot of race people would like to go to Houston to see th e annual California 11 victory and the wide open Short Track 250cc races on Sat u rd a y night. Daytona lasts longer , if you ca n stand the strain and pace , plus there's t he "World's Most famous Bea ch " which is an honest fact. There 'is something happening in Da yton a every day a n d every night from Monday , Mar . 6 through Su nd ay, Mar . 12. If you ca n 't find anything else to do , or don't have th e m on ey, you can always. walk down the beach and watch th e ever-increasing number of Europeans get sunburned for th e first tim e in th eir lives. Last yea r over a dozen cha rter jets brought the foreign visitors to Da ytona from all ove r Europe. plus Australia . If you make it , you ca n see the only U .S . a ppearance of both Kenny Roberts and defending Da ytona champ , Steve Baker. You can a lso see a greatly seasoned and improved Skip Aksland maybe whip th em both. In addition , there are four nights of short track, sc;ven nights , yes seven, of speedway racmg, an enduro through one of America's last honest -t o goodness swa ~ ps, four ro~d races and an AMA Stadlu ~ MX Sen~s r.ace. . Add on a nightly radio/Interview show . two award banquets , two cycle shows and the aweso m e display of motor~yc1es chopped , has.hed , c.ustomlzed, reworked a nd polished like you hav e never seen before. . Good news for the younger set this yea~ at Da ytona.: Eastern colleges are gettmg th eir spnng bre.ak so~mer than usu al and Da ytona , which WIll already b fill d . b id k '11 e ~ e to capacity y rru -wee , WI b~ m vaded by hundreds of college glTI~ , mo st. of whom ha ve yet to take their first rid e on a motorcycle . Easter~, National a nd Contin~ntal ca n put It a ll toget he r for you with a ph on e call to them or y? u r local t: avel agent.
