The Devil does it atOTHGMX By Devil Don Fisher LAS VEGAS , NV ,JAN. 8 Under a beautifully clear blue sky on a chilly Sunday morning , the Southern Nevada chapter of the Over The Hill Gang held 18 their first motocross race of the new yea r at W illiams Racewa y al ong with the regularly sch eduled event s held by the La s Vegas Motocross Club. Under normal ci rcumstances, our club incorpo ra tes the usual fou r class racing format : No vice , Intermediate, In dian Dunes' sandy corners never lacked for action during AME motocrossing. Am ateur. and Expe rt. Unfort u na tely, on this p articu lar m orning , our members chose not to show up in any grea t numbers; only eno ugh riders to hold ra ces in three of th e fou r classes. We had to exclu de th e No vice class for lack of th e requ ired three p a rt icipants. Those of us that did show up had one hell of a good time . I will ha ve to say tha t. in all hon esty. th e track was in the very best condition I have seen or ridden in qui te some tim e. OTHGA member s ran two 20 minute heats (ta lk a bout being ou t of sha pe) . Because of our few nu mbers we all took th e same flag , a nd the Experts went to the fron t after th e firs t tu rn with two ex ce p tions: Jammin ' Jim Keet on (Am a teur) led us a ll into th e seco nd turn followed by Pumper Phil Connell , (Ama teu r), m yself, Devil Don Fisher (Ex pert), Juicey J ohn VanHoove (Exp ert) and th e rest of th e pack . Juicey John and Am ateu r Kareful Ken Hammenn (who wound up with th e number on e plate at th e end of the year) became tangled soon after we all exited the third turn ; neither was injured. I caught and passed Pumper Phil through a series of tight turns midway through th e first half of the first lap and then passed Jammin' Jim down the back straight. MeanwhileJuicey John was ca tc hing up to the leaders at a blistering pace . Into the mid-point of the race it became a two -man race in the Expert class between myself and Juicey John . with yours truly winning the Expert class in the first heat. In the Amateur class . Jammin' Jim ran out of jam and that heat was won by Pumper Ph il. The Intermediate class was won by Burly BiIl Baily with apparent ease . In the second heat the show was in the Expert cla ss. Into the second turn Juicey John , Jammin' Jim (ho w'd he get in there again ?) a nd m yself led th e thundering herd. After I was able to get around Jammin ' J im , who later threw a chain, I started on my qu est to overtake Juicey John . We had a good dice for most of the remaining race , h andl eb ar to handlebar. Lucky for me , th e j uic e finally left Juicey J ohn a nd I pulled out another win for th e day. In the ot he r cla sses th e com pe tition was not qui te as to rr id but non etheless th e wins were well deserved and hard ea rned . Once again Pumper Phil won ou t over Kareful Ken in the Amateur class and Burly Bill too k cha rge of th e Int erm ediate class. Resu lts in Resul ts Sect ion . A large turnout challenged the 75 miles on a fas t course packed by earlier rain. Roger Ads it had the lead at th e smokebomb hounded by Ron Kephart , Jim Valov, Bob Morton , Meyers , Romy Ta ylor and Pat Flannagan. Then Kephart exploded , and by th e end of the first lap he had a healthy five minute lead , only to take to the air 200 ya rds later without benefit of bike aft er hitting a bad rock. He was up and ready to go as th e pack came by , but his bike wasn't as valiant as his body. By th e second lap Meyers and Taylor had moved to first and second from fifth and third positions. Morton jumped from sixth to fourth , pouring on the coal. Valov hung in there for third . Steve Kephart sm ok ed it from 10th to fifth position. At the fin ish , it wa s Meyers , Morton . a nd Taylor taking th e first th ree posi tions cla ss-wise (250cc) and overall . Open Amateur Valov was fou rt h , Steve Kephart hung on to his fifth overall with a flapping rear tire. Bruce Cornell got the gold in the VALENCIA , CA ,JAN. 8 Eric Graves (Yarn-Syclop's) rode to an overall win in the 125cc Intermediate race. He had heavy competition from the large field of racers, especially Gordon Howell from Quebec , Canada riding a Yamaha. Howell was amazed at the difference between our tracks and those throughout Quebec and Montreal. There the riders go out and find 11 field, pay the farmer for the use of it and layout a track for themselves. He couldn't believe the condition of the Indian Dunes International Track. So smooth and free of obstacles compared to what he 's been used to. v Taking all of this in stride together with missing his practice, Gordon went out and pressured Graves relentessly in a ba ttle for the lead, after getting by C . Coleman who had the holeshot . Both riders managed to pull away from the pack and continued their own battle as Rod Richardson fouglit his way up a nd into third, HoweIl slipped a wheel under Graves and managed to ho ld the lead to the end of the moto. The second time out , Graves took 2
