I'm learning how to wri te to you r age level), street b ikers only need to have a few minu tes to sp are , and th ey are wandering do wn ,the good roads , fr ee as a bird. You poor d irt b ikers hav e to strap on leather p a nts , shin protectors , skid lids, high top , ste el toed boots a nd everything except a stee l jock . Somehow I think the fu n wou ld flow pre tt y fast out of a sport that takes a week to get ready for , what with repairi ng your b ike a fter a ll the owie s you got falling down , only to have yourself a n d a couple of bosom buddies jam int o th e front seat of a funky old truck t o ha ul yo ur Wazoomie 122 Y2 cCring-a -d ings out to a place you can ride. After all that , the chances of making it through a wh ole d a y withou t using you r body for a bulldozer is prett y slim . And that you folks call fu n. The readers of Bik er, wh ich is th e only good gu y ra g for th e street biker , kn ow better. T hey just walk ou t to th e cu rb . hop on the ir bike. and rid e . W ell guys, I don't kn ow a bo u t the desert , but the last tim e I went puttin g on m y scoote r I saw three or four you ng low m ileage pi t woofies th at were just begging for a ride. It took me almost an hour to pi ck ou t the one I wan ted , and I had to tu rn dow n a coup le of foxes after tha t. You kno w, I keep going on about how di rt bike riders are nuts, a nd the m ajo rit y of you write in asking how I know, if I've never tried it. W ell (moth er, forgive me) I did go di rt bike rid ing. A co uple of tim es. T he first time was ba ck in 197 1, wh en Suzuki fir st introduced th e T M400 wid owmaker. The second time was a bo u t a week ago. I was out o n a ne w H a rl ey Lowr id er doin g a road test for Bik er. I was out on t he back sid e of a local mountain ra nge . I ca me aro u nd a corner a nd there was a lot of ice on the roa d . That was all it took . As the b ike ma de a beeline for the d irt m y eyes enla rge d three and a hal f times. As I went off the road my hea rt ju m ped a bout a foot , wh ich made it very ha rd to see. I was a little u nnerved . It wasn 't until I h ad the bike under cont rol, lying on its sid e using my leg for a rest (wou ldn't want to me ss up a good pain t job ) th at I realized wh at had gone on.
