ORANGE, CA , DEC. 4 Despite rumors that he is a bionic plonker created by Honda , Marland Whaley actually dabbed two times en route to yet another victory, proving he is still human. The 40 sections wer e not all that easy, it's just th a t Whaley, three time National Champ . is a su perla tive rider. Marland . th e ace of th e Honda factory team, edged the cream of the Southern California Experts at th is Interna t ional Trials Assn. ( IT A) Saddleback Pa rk event. Second spot went to wor ld class rider Bernie Schreiber, who in spite of a shaky first loop , fini shed strong aboard his 350 Bultaco. Third plac e was Honda team rider Mark Eggar , riding well , aboard th e long-stroke version. Fourth place was Gr eg Lersch. th is past spring's Big Bear Two Day trials winner, riding a 350 Bul. Fifth was Greg Byers (350 Bul) , making a good sho wing for a fellow who ha s only been com peting as an Expert for a couple of months. Do ing Kaw a saki proud was Ga ry LaPlante in sixth p lace . Michael Allen has est a b lishe d himself as one of the area's better Amateur riders . besting a good field ab oard his 348 Montesa. Rick Bien iak captured second, riding in his usual ~onserva tive , consistent style , on his ' 350 Bul. Rick McCabe, aboard an aging 350 Bul, finished a solid third . The Nov ice contingent was led by Jay Peake on a Honda 250 thumper. One more finish near th e top will mov e Ja y up to Ama teu r in ITA competition. Jack Weir (350 Bul ) rolled into second. Snowden Mathews fin ished a respectable third on a 350 Bul. In four th was Bultaco 350 · mounted Ted Feland . Derreck Bernard put his little 125 Bultaco into the fifth slot. The Senior "A" class saw another tooth and nailer between Bob Grove and Gil Smith, with Bob once again edging his former student. Third place was Boyd Bernard. All were riding Bultaco 350s. Senior " B" honors went to Gordon LaDuke on a 350 Bul. Gordon had three straight seconds prior to today's competition. ATA president Bill Markham put his 250 Honda into second. Jack Stone on a Honda 125 plonked into third. Ralph Dodson put his 350 Bul into fourth . The Kids class was won by Mike Tincup on a Yamaha 80 . Erik Soderquist put his Yamaha 80 through its paces and captured second . Third spot was Bill Tincup aboard a Honda 125 . Beginner class rider Ga ry Dudley walked away with the honors , aboard a 250 Bu l. Gary will be transferring to N ovi ce soo n. Sec ond p la ce was decid ed by cle a ns , Allan Willis (25 0 Hon) and Dou g Hofer (35 0 Bul ) both had scores of eight. W illis had 36 cleans to 34 by Hofer. Kevin Mo rri s and Frank T ra vesio both h ad sco res of 14 a nd it was necessa ry to break th e tie a ga in with cl eans. M orris edg ed Travesio 32 to 30 for fourth a nd fifth . .N ot to be outdone were T om Beesle y and Da ve Greene both with scores of 15 - more tie breaking with cleans , with Beesle y keeping his coo l long enoug h to ride 32 sect ion s clean to 30 by Gr eene. Now that's close competition! The popular First T ime Beginner cl ass keeps drawing newcomers to trials each week . Bill Kranhold kept his feet up th e mo st and won the ITA Belt for first spot , a boa rd a Honda 250 . Gregory Reed came in second riding a 250 Suzuki with go od form. T hird was Mark Steitle on a Yamaha 175 . "Camp" was in the "Gra nd Canyon" area for thi s event. The ea rly morning a ctivity was high lig h te d by Bernie Schreiber , Marland Whaley and Duane Feland p racticing in one of th e area 's d eep , narrow . washed out gullies. drawing quite a crowd of on lookers, oohing and aahing as th e fellows put on some of their better moves. The sections were an assortment of rocks , sa ndwas hes , gullies . hills and valleys . Section 15 was unusual in that it required the rider to double back on his tra cks while entering and exiting. The entrance was a path carved about wheel width down the sid e of a slippery bank. Just before bottoming out , a sharp, downhill right turn was required . A few feet up th e canyon th e rider was faced with an abrupt rise , a bit above eye level to a rider standing on his pegs . A blast on the loud handle and a lot of lea n ing over th e b ars put the rider on top of this hazard . A little breathing room on top allowed a sh arp left over loose stones, over a ditch , then down a sharp dropoff, another left that required the rider to put the front wheel wa y up on the bank in order to set-up the placement of the rear wheel on the narrow ledge tha t was used for. the entry!
