Lawson . trying to take advantage of the situation. literally got himself got between a rock and a hard spot but both managed to do _a bit of faricy riding and avoid what could have been a dandy smash up. Perkins still had his hands full with Rainey and was still keeping him right where he wanted him. The fourth lap saw Pete Hames, running in fifth place, get spit off as he went into turn four too hot . He was all right but the error cost him two laps whi ch he was never able to make up. Although no one changed positions for the next nine laps it was never for lack of trying and it finally happened on the white flag. Perkins had his front tire break loose and Rainey was there to collect, moving himself to third. At the checkered it was Grigsby, with Lawson and Rainey a close two, three. Lawson had nothing to weep about as his flawless ride in the Money 11 put more than a jingle in his pockets. Chris Cannon had second off the lin e but quiet Joe Steffen went to work and caught Cannon going high out of tum four and neatly slipped underneath him to put him in a position to go after Lawson. Although he closed the gap considerably he was never able to get close enough to challenge the Upland rider and settled for second overall with Cannon third. Pat Dobbins has to be considered the hard luck rider of the night. After leading the Open Amateur/Expert 11 for six laps , he appeared to loose his chain and had to pull off and watch John Calicchio collect t he honors with Eddie Drake second. Dylan Neihart took on Speedway ace Jim Turner in the Open Amateur/Expert half, mile. Neihart went wire to wire but in the ea rly going it was Bobby Butt that was knocking on his door with Turner, not able to get the drive off the line with his Speedway machine, in third. Butt fell prey to bike problems on the sixth lap and with clear sailing ahead of him , Turner dialed hisJawa on but Neihart turned the wick up a little higher, said "Adios," and took the checkered. Ken Renner was third . Neihart turned in another good performance, taking the lead away from Chris Cannon after one lap of the 250cc Amateur/Expert 11 andnever looked back. Cannon held off Eddie Drake to collect second. Cannon played the bridesmaid role in the 250cc Expert half mile, chasing Pete Hames for eight laps. Cannon appeared to be pretty close to Hames off the line but the drag race to the first turn told the tale. Joe Steffen got by Terry Singleton on the third lap to finish third. The real battle was b etween Amateurs Rocky French and Mark Butler. French from Las Vegas , had the lead at the start and held it for four laps before he started going too high out of turn four, an error which had cost him earlier in the evening. Butler saw the open door went through and took over the front spot. French came back, reclaimed-the lead the next lap only to have Butler return the favor on the white flag lap. That's where Butler blew it because it was French's turn to lead on the checkered flag and that's what he did . Bobby Garabedian again dominated the 125cc Amateur/Expert Class winning both the 11 and half mile from Rodney Rainey . According to Dad, a new 250cc machine will be under the Christmas tree so. he can go out and play with his racing buddies , Pete Hames, Todd Brown and Chris Cannon. Results in Results Section. On the second lap Steve "Moto" Cross joined the fun and got by Reisinger. It was a short lived moment of glory: he was out on the next lap and the top three were content to hold position to the checkered. The second moto saw Cross get a super start that gave him the lead but Bauer was quick to react and made short work of the Suzuki rider a nd had the lead well in hand by the second lap. Only two schools showed up for the High School competition but they battled right down to the wire for the win.
