Stetlen pulls Elsinore TT hat trick By A ndi Gan gewer ELSINO RE, CA , DEC. 17 Joe Steffen pulled off a triple header in the Elsinore Racewa y Sp ecial Expert , Open Expert , and 250cc Amateur/Expert class. Sp rinkles threatened throughout the night but it never rai ned enough to ca ll off th e races. Steffen was six bike lengths in front of all the o ther 250cc Amate urs a nd Experts . He sta rted on the back line with the two other Experts but at the end of lap one he was alm ost h al fwa y around the track before the second place Vince Burna came by. Amateu r Jim Summer s, Expert Steve Griffith , Amateur Ben Me yer , Expert Scot t Polson and M itch Zehner were all in contention fo r secon d through seventh place. The checke re d fell on Steffen , Burna and th ird pl ace Summers . Ra ce two for the 250s , St effen had the lead by the fir st tu rn. Steve Griffith a nd Jim Summers were wh eel , to wh eel b attling for second the wh ole race . Griffith's Yam a ha slip ped in under Summers and the finish went Steffen, G riffith and Summers. The fin al race , Joe had to work a little for his lead . Vince Burna pulled th e holeshot and h eld Steffen off for one lap. Joe just oc u ld n't get around Burna until he left the door slightly ajar and Joe stepped in . That was the last Vince saw of Joe. Steffen earned the first and one win in the string of three. Due to the threatening weather the crowd was sm all so t he 250s were allowed to race with the Open bikes and Joe on his 250 Yamaha took the overall win. This was a crazy class since the Experts ran the race on the TT track backwards. Joe had a big lead but it was a close call for Joel Windham . Right before the finish line his bike got sick and Steve Polson almost grabbed away second. Moto two, Don Meiner had the lead , but aga in Joe whipped around and took the checkered. Don Me iner, SCOtt Polson and Joel Windham wer e wh eel to wheel but the last la p Windham again had his troubles as his back tire went out from .un der him a nd Po lson , Meiner and Griffith Santa Ana, CA 92703 crossed it up to fin ish seco nd , third a nd fou rth be h ind J oe . The fina l race , Steffen had t he lead , but W ind ha m was right with h im . As Steffen and W indham came slid ing a rou nd the sweeper and up over the j um p, they threw rooster ta ils at the spectators a lon g th e side lines. Po lson and W in dham placed second a nd third behind Steffen. Polso n a nd W in dh am we re competi ng fo r second as they knew Steffen al re ady had the win sewed up. J oel ke pt the door closed on Polson and they finished in that order behind J oe . . W indham wa s giving it a ll he had to get Joe , but nothing he tri ed see med to solve th e problem of passin g J oe . Pol son was third with M it ch Zehner in ching in ahea d of Ben Meyer. Moto three was Windham's chance to hold Steffen to his first second of the night. Joel was riding for a ll he was worth a nd rea lly putting it to Joe until th e white flag gave St effen hi s boost of ene rgy and he d ived u nder Windham to wi n . NO. 3905340 T he end of the season saw the half mile/TT troops out in force at Corona and they closed out the year with plenty of good racing. The half mile Money race was a return match between Eddie Lawson riding a Shell Yamaha and Don Grigsby aboard Dyla n Neihart's Ed Steffen -tuned Yamaha . In their last meeting Lawson had been the victor so Grigsby was out to prove a point , He did so immediately, out on top with the drop of the flag . Lawson, close enough to ride double, was just as serious. Danny Perkins, coming up with one of his better starts , had Wayne Rainey at bay and was looking confident. Grigsby and Lawson had all the stops pulled out as they came flying out of turn four with three laps down.
