Buckner's win came in the m ini No vice where he topped Clay Smith of Hemet . In non-high school action , the Open Pros seemed to be awed by the presence of Rocket Rex Staten . They were all content to follow him around the Corona hillsides and didn't even try to pass each other. David Williams collected second and Steve ..Mota" Cross th ird. The 125cc Pros went for it and it was a battle right down to th e wire. The first mota saw Phil Thorst en sen away first with J eff Hollie a nd Doug Lincoln in hot pursuit . T ho rst ensen managed to hold everybody off until th e last lap when Holli e got around him to b ri n g ho me t he win . Thorste nse n collected secon d and Lin coln third . In the final go it was Li ncoln who got the jum p off the line with Hollie second and Thorstensen thi rd. On the fifth lap Hollie ma d e a mistake th at cost him as T horstensen went to second and held it to the checkered . Lincol n got the win with Ho llie third. When the scores were ad ded u p it was a three way tie for first with th e nod go ing to Lincoln with his 3· 1. Thorstensen collect ed second with a 2·2 and Ho llie was th ird with 1·3 . Lunde's Roo roosts CMC MX By Patti Firth-Trotter _e CARLSBAD, CA , DEC . 11 PERF_ _ I'//OD/ICTS 7633 26 AVL e_1le Perk. elL 213-998'7250 Racers at the Continental MotorSports Club (CMC) Carlsbad Raceway motocross enj oyed the outrageously well- prepped Carlsbad track ; even the downhill had been watered. The usual late afternoon dust storm never happened . Chris Chaffee and his super quick Yamaha were first off the line to begin the first Open Pro ra ce. Alan Smith (H us) came around th e first tum right on Chaffee's rear tire. Doug Boyd (Mai), Val Tamietti (Mai) and Mota Meister's Bill Jewell rounded the Suzuki tower ahead of Wayne Boyer (Suz) and Jeff Browning (KTM) . Chaffee was able to stay in the lead for two laps. The third time around , Smith swooped by Chaffee. Tamietti, on his Track·N·Travel machine moved ahead of Boyd on t he same lap'. Boyer was by Boyd for fourt h. At the top of the uphill Boyd threw his chain and dropped ba ck in the pack. W ith Boyd out, Jewell wicked his brand new Red Mons ter Machine to the max while he start ed to push Tam iet ti . Boyer had dropped ba ck to ninth but he was certainl y not ou t of contention for the win. Wayne began picking off riders each lap. First to go was Browning . then Dale McKin ney and Randy Rod riquez. By th e 12th lap Boyer had gotten by fifth -place Mark Rodman and was sett ing u p his attack on J ewell. Alan Smith had suc h a lead by th is point in th e race th ere was no way he could be gott en . Chaffee and Tarnietti were onl y a few feet a pa rt. On th e last lap as Smi th led Chaffee and Tarnietti, Bill Jewell got pa ssed as he smacked into a lapped rider and Boyer bla sted by, finish ing the ra ce in fourth . After winning th e first mota by such a co m m a n d ing lea d Smith was pumped for the second mota a nd he rocketed his Husky off the line for a fantastic holeshot , but before the end of the first lap Alan was off the bike and on the ground. Rodman had the lead with Chaffee pushing. Tarnietti and Jewell were ahead of Boyer. Chaffee ripped by Rodman with T am ietti and Boyer follow ing close behind. Lap number six was when Boyer made his move for th e lead. Once he was in front of the pack he just kept on th e gas to cross the finish line first. Chaffee crossed second to take the o verall. Rodman a nd Rodriguez we re nex t. Sm ith and Tamietti were further back in the pack: Smith with the curse of all racers, a flat tire and Tarnietti a bit jangled after a get off a t the top of the uphill . Ste ve Bauer (DG) sized up the 250cc Pro competition and knew the on ly way to go was WFO and that is precisely what he did . When Stu Peters pulled the lever to drop 'the gate, Bauer was at the head of the racing mob . Doug Boyd (Suz), Tim Welker (FML), Boyer and Roo -riding Tim Lunde were in a tight knot of bikes. Boyer got through th e mess for second place with Welker third. Lunde and Boyd next. Abian Lelevier (Ma i) was being pushed by Suzukimounted Ste ve Rhyan. Bauer was feeling the pressure of Boyer and on the eighth lap as the two were going into th e tum at the top of th e uphill , Boyer bumped Bauer for first. Lunde had gone by W elker a nd was now in third and closing in on th e leaders. La p 10 had Boyer and Bau er bar to bar under the Suzuki Bridge . Bau er did it to Boyer th is time and flew over the drop-a-wa y in the front position. Steve looked as if he would be the winner of th e ra ce only to have Boyer surprise him on th e do wnh ill. Both riders descended off the long hill side by side when they got too close to each other and Bauer took a trip over the bars. crashing on his head. Boyer smoked around the rest of th e cou rse for the win while Steve sat on the ground trying to clear the fog ou t of his head . Lunde crossed the finish line second with Welker, Rhyan , Loren Hall (Ma n) and Wes Sutton (CBS) getting the next slots. Boyer got go ing first in the second mota with Boyd, Welker, Lelevier and Paul Thede (SO P) ahead of Gregg Weaver (Mai) and Lunde. On the third lap Lunde was in third . Next time around he was second. Boyer and Lunde spent the next four laps giving the crowd a thriller. Lunde lassoed Boyer in front of the grandstands on the seventh lap , and continued in the lead for the win and the overall money. Boyer got the second place payback and Welker third place money. Terry Sh ekell (Yam) got going first in 125cc Pro inoto one with Tony W~nket (Yam) . T im Lunde (Roo). Bria n Mye rscou gh (Su z) a nd Pe te Wanket. (Yam ) tryi ng to get by him . ! on y d idn't waste any time in doing Just that. Pete was back to fifth at this point but sett ing up the ride rs for his attack. W anket a nd W anket mixed his at tack. W a nk et and Wanket mixed it up and Pet e pu t Tony back to second. Myerscough moved through traffic to take care of Lunde and then it was bye-bye Tony. Myerscough was second . Escondido Su zuki 's Scott Anderson had com e up th rough the pack to finish fifth behind Lunde, Wanket , Myerscough a nd Wanket. Tony Wanket took the holeshot in mota two but by the end of the first lap, Myerscough had control of the lead . Tony , Pete, Anderson and Lunde were next . Pete got by Tony to taking Myerscough on the third lap . Pete led until he and Myerscough got tangled up with some lapped riders and Myerscough got out of the hairpin for the lead. Pete re-took the front spot and crossed under the checkers first with Myerscough , Tony, Tim and Scott next . Pete pocketed most of the purse. Results in Results Section.
