EndotYear Scrambles By Maureen Lee PERRIS, CA, DE~. 11 It was the last scram bles of the year with the Gri psters hosting, and what a dayl We haven't had such a close points race in a long 26 while. Riders fell more than usual in their eagerness, although the track was superbly prepared. The Mini class started wrong first race of the day. Starter Ed Drechsler gave them a restart and Curtis Cannon won that one. Second round the track had just been watered and riders were really slippin' , slidin' and Fallin' down, but Michael Kirby stayed up and won it. Darren Hulbert won the last mota and his combined points gave him the overall win . Steve Polson and Bud Carroll have gone at it all season for that number one 125cc Junior·Expert plate and it went down to the wire. Firs t moto Bobby Garabedian got away running in front, and ru n he did. Steve Griffith held onto second for a while u ntil Carroll got away from changing places with Polson and took it over . Round two Carroll went out front and although you knew ' they all wanted to go quicker , th e y remembered the track was freshl y wa t ered and contro lled th e ir e age r ness. Jay Bales, who has also been right there -in the front a ll season , was now changing his line at the top of the hill each lap and really putting pressure on Bud. But he just couldn't get the extra !iriv~ to pass. . Last mota and off they went , with Carroll securing the lead. Polson tried to better his position after he got caught,in the first tum scr amb le. The number one plate rested on that moto. Polson rushed up with Jay Bales right with him and both got past Carroll, who settled for third wh ile Jay took the win . Unofficially, the number one is Carroll's but Steve came so close we . wish there was a platethat could say " O ne -a nd- a- h alf" or something! Now those 500cc Expertsl It took almost ten' m inutes - to get th e first mota away: The referee finally had to warn some of them , "J ust ju m p ' that second line once more and you' re out, period." That restored a little order, even Mike Myers'managed to cool it and get off smoothly. Up at the top of the hill all kinds of things happened. Rex Hailey came off . and was just getting 'u p as another rider hit him hard , knocking him spinning (his Bell now has a hole in it) .• While themelee was goi ng on up there Steve Tinsley could hear Charles Petty screaming, "Steve, stopl stop!" Petty had his foot jammed up behind Steve's sea t! . Next moto th ey wer e , just a tad b etter . Th is tim e it was M ik e Montgomery rolling a ro und in t he dirt top of the hill. Don Frauenberger, locked into his own points battle, got second and T om Heard third . Rex came back after that stunning crash to win the second mota (in 'a borrowed helmet) an d 'g ot fourth overall, Ah, you big bore riders always make my day.
