CA !10068 Phone : 21J..7U ·151n Winter series paperwork prep plan By Dave "Works" Miller and Ja ck W ri ght The privateer Pro motocross rider has a choice to make this winter. Depending on his plans for the 1978 season, he can travel either to Florida for the Winter-Alvl.A MX Series or to California . for the California Mote-sports Club sanctioned Suzuki Golden State Series. Both series - and both sanctioning organizations -ha ve a lot to offer bu t for d ifferent reasons. The Golden State Series, with a total purse of $2 1,000 spl it equally betw een three classes and seven races, sho ul d have plenty of co m petition. Along with the $3 ,000 purse for each ra ce U.S. Suzuki has agreed to put in an other $3, 300 points fund . The Florida W inter-AMA. ra ces pay $3,600 per event in a four-ra ce series for a $14,400 total. While th at d oesn 't match th e CMC/Suzuki $24 ,300 pu rse and po int fund , th e Flor ida series does have othe r benefits . . The AMA's Fiorida winter series d oesn 't pa y as mu ch tota l series mo ney , b ut wha t it does pa y is worth mo re than mon ey to some rid ers. T he Florid a Winter-AMA Series pays points. The Novi ce-rated Pr o rider has a chance to earn th e points necess ary to obtain a n Expert rati ng in the AMA . • W ithout p oints, the Novice ride r's cha nces of KaininK a n entry to the Nationals or the stadium series are al most non-existent. Wh ile the Expe rt rati ng isn't a bsolutely ' n ecessa ry fo r being acce pted for a stadium or N ation a l it does make things e asie r. The unrated Pro is th e last rider tha t will be accep ted for a n eve nt . If th ere is an ope ni ng for an u nrat ed rid er , th e number of p oints that h a ve been ac cumulated will decid e whether you or some one else will get to ride. To get either license, ca ll the sanctioning body and request that the y send you an appli cati on for their compe tition license. While you ha ve them on th e ph one ask them to send you a co py of t he ir p rofessional rul ebook .' It might com e in ha ndy . Fr om th e AMA , you sho uld receive a pa cket in the mail with everythi ng that you will need to obtain you r licens e. In it will be you r application for a Professional Compet ition License , a n application for aJohn Doe mechanic 's license , and a medical .form. You can fill out the form s for the lice nses, but your do ctor will ha ve to fill out th e m edical form and ma il it to th e AMA . (Make sure that he sends it to the " Motorcyclist" Association no t • the "Medical" association!) The Californ ia Mote -sports 'Club' doesn't req uire as much pa perwork. The form that you will receive back fro m CMC should tak e you less than one mi nute to com p le te. Tha t's provid ing of cou rse , tha t you ca n print legibly, know you r address and ca n sign _you r "n am e . Although it's not necessa ry , we rec ommend tha t you join th e clu b before th e d ay of the rac e to avoid any problems and po st en try fees. You ere going to pay the price. You might as well kn ow that to race either series is not goi ng to be chea p . The cost of the license and entries alone will set you ba ck close to $200 . The AMA will cost you less than CMC , though you will not be getting a deal. The AM A licen se will cost you $55 . Add to th is, one ' to th ree J ohn Doe mechanic lice nses at $15 each for a possibl e $100 expend iture not eve n in cludin g entries. Entries will ru n a bout $12 apiece. At the CMC , whil e it's ch eaper to ac quire you r license , it will cost you m ore in the long run. W ith th e license cost ing $10 , and entries running $25 a p iece if you mail ente r ($35 post ), the total for CMC's seven -race series will be 190 . Tha t's a goo d ch unk of cash a ny way you look at it . W ith the CMC you will have a chance of winning more money with the $3 ,000 purse at seven races. CMC will be p aying back $3 00 for first place, in each class for first place and down ~ to 25 for a 10th place finish. Something to thin k about if you are planning to race the Gold en State Series is riding two classes. Along with gett in g you in sha pe you 'st a nd a cha nce of picking up more cas h. A drawback. to th is of course would be cost of entries a nd m ai ntaini ng two bikes ra ther th an just one. If you were not in condi tion before you sta rt ed you woul d probably lose more than you would make. If you are tr avelin g mor e th an a day's d rive from hom e it's ha rd to make back all th e money that you will , spe nd in expenses. You will have to consider hot el , gas , and food bill s wh ich will add up very qu ickly. Some of th e Pr o riders that we ha ve ta lked to a re p la nni ng to ride the first half of the Gold en .Sta te Ser ies and then traveling to Florid a for th e W in te r -AMA Series. Neit her series will be easily won. You 'll h ave to put together a lot of variables to do well. Su ccess de pe nds on what you want to ge t ou t of th is winter's racing. Whet her you are; after th e mone y, poi nts , condi tioni ng or experience, you will ha ve to work for it. Even if you don't win much , or for that matter an y money or points, you will h ave gai ned som e experience and conditioning for the new year. W ith a litt le luck , money and a lot of det ermination and ridi ng ab ili ty, you sho u ld be able to attain you r goa ls. See th e Cal endar section for both schedules. • Californ ia M otO-SPOTtS Club P.O. Box 1402 Costa M esa, Calif. 92626 714/557-332 3 A m erican J'1otoTcycie A ssociatio n P.O.
