Schreiber numero uno at A T A Trial de Espana By Dale Brown O RANGE. CA . DEC . 11 Bultaco's Bernie Schreiber won the American Trials Association (ATA) Trial de Espana at Saddleback Park, edging current ATA and U.S. champion Marland Whaley by two points. ATA held the Trial de Espana to raise money to send its top two riders to the Scottish Six-Days Trial. Money from last year's event 10 helped Schreiber and Whaley go to the Scottish this year. where they placed 11th and 13th respectively. the highest American finishes ever. FOT Experts. the . trial consisted of two parts. The first part was the regular trial . riding along with everybody else . The second part was an exhibition. .riding five extremely difficult sections four times. The morning trial was held on a loop that nearly circled the park. Section two was the first Expert trap . featuring a nearly vertical downhill entrance; and a steep. slippery. offcamber uphill turn before the ex it. The rest of the loop featured rock and gully sections. Section ten was among the most impressive physi cally: A steep. narrow rock gully with a big rock step and tight right uphill turn j ust before the ex it. Schreiber and Whaley both cleaned it. Section 20 too k away p oin t s from almost everybody. Set in a washed-out bank in the mid dl e of the parking lot . the first turn was laid across a washout. Everyone took a deliberate dab to get the bike across . A tight turn through another washout often took more points: there wasn 't enough room to rnanuever. The afternoon exhibition sections were awesome to see. Section one was straight downhill for SO feet . then a sharp left and a traverse up and ac ross another h ill. Trap two wou nd up and around the side of a steep hill. Three had a was ho ut crossing that took points fro m eve rybody . t hen an awkward off-camber and a spectacular exit up a l Ovfoot vertical bank. After the first loop of the morning trial . Whaley led Honda teammate Mark Eggar and Schreiber. IS 'points to 18 and 20 . respectively. Whaley and Schreiber both turned in 10-point performances the next time. while Eggar. who eventually finished third. had 12. Whaley lost seven points on the final loop . three better than Schreiber. for an eight-point lead going into the exhibition. The exhibition was nearly even until just before the end. where Whaley scored a couple of fives . When the results were tabulated . Schreiber had 10 less points on the exhibition (27) and won the Expert class by two. 6769. Eggar was third with a 107 total.
