W right EL PASO , TX , NOV. 20 Star Track in El Paso closed out their yearly m otocross series by running the track backwards and givin g dou ble points. It was also the 'la rgest turnout of the yea r for riders. It's bee n a struggle all year between three riders in the Pro classes - Pete Tanner, Scott Logston and Ma by McIntyre. This race sewed up the year's overall win for Logston. Early in the year Pete Tan ner took the lead in the 250 and . Open Pro classes while Scott Logston, just riding 125 Pro , held the points lead in that class. Ma by held a second in the 250, the only class he was riding. H alfway through the year , both Logston and McIntyre started riding . all three classes. Logston took over the lea d in all three classes then left to compete on the National motocross circuit . Logston was injured in his first race back home and was out for two months. When he returned to action , he was dropped to second in the 250 behind Mclntyre who made every race with high placings. Going into this last race of the season Logston had sewn up the 125 and Open classes and had narrowed the gap in the 250 , but Mclntyre could hold the points lead. Logston rode flawlessly all day, winning five out of six races and placing first overall in all three Pro classes. Logston earned the title of number one rider by earning the most points and the number one plates in the 125 and Ope n classes. Mclntyre is rated number two and earned the number one pl ate in the 250 class. Pete T anner held on for number three in the 250 and O pen cla sses even after missing several races. In " he 250 Pros , Logston (Yam) t grabbed the holeshot and immediately started pulling away from the pack. Steve LaPointe, on a Yamaha now , and Pete T an ner (Pen) diced for three laps when Tanner took second pl ace . Logston won with a big margin. Maby Mclntyre (Ya m) who had a terrible start, moved up to challenge LaPointe but LaPointe held his ground to finish third . LaPointe was a lso ridi ng three classes and was ha ving one of his best days but was forced to retire after the first round of motos due to illness . In the second moto, Logston again took the lead at the start and that was it. Maby followed in second with Pete Tanner a close third. Fred Fromel, a former pro who was seriously injured in June , made his comeback in the 250 Amateur with a good ride for first overall. Jim Amos was a close second. Amos didn't even have to race, he al ready had th e 250 Amateur number one plate. The Old T imers was probably the wildest race of t he day. None of these "old men" would give an inch and almost all rode over th eir he ads . Sherman Barnett, owner of Yamaha of EI Paso and Logston's coach, was running away with the second moto when he bit th e dus t, p utting him out of the race. Smooth rid ing Ja ck Heminway (Mai) put it all together for the win . Mike Da y ( Pe n) won the Open Amateurs , which mo ved him to second in th e sta nd ings . Ken Johnson (CZ) who took second in the Old Timers tod ay, took the number. one pla te in Don't the Open Amateurs for the year. We hear Ken is probably going to hang it up at the end of this yea r. Ken put in the lights for the night track. works on the track each race and ha s to be the best sportsman on the track. We can't think of a better way to go ou t than on top.
