H, Spencer FREMONT, CA , NOV . 19 Appearing as a miracle, the Fremont quarter mile that had been shut down for over a year has come back to life and looks so successful, even in the middle of winter the Experts are still fighting for White Plate points. All the local racers are just happy that it's going. Not many spectators are out yet but who knows ? Halfway through , the series saw Jim Mertens try for double victories and wind up on the hard pack, just feet from the checkered after a slight altercation with Rick Delacy. Rick won his first big race coming off of injuries. Mertens rode by the large 250cc Expert pack, getting his Bossframed Yamaha ready for an assault on Houston in two months . With the Monterey short tracks completed, the Mini class swelled its ranks with Doug Chandler showing off his Salinas Yamaha for the 80cc Expert win, assuring another year as the number one rider. Jack Barton took second in this , and the IOOcc Expert behind Gary Johnson . Kelly Fischer took home a ' pair of trophies with a win in the 80cc Junior over Steve Mayfield and a second to Dave Carriger in the 60cc Combined. Stuart McDaniels is making his own name by continuing to dominate the 125cc and 250cc Novice class. winning both once aga in . Bob Cunnington and the Hodaka Way operation still lead the 125cc Experts and Juniors around , but with Wayne Karcich now an Expert , Bob may well have some good competition. Larry Krusemann went from last 10 first in one week, winning the Junior part over Wayne Thompson. Paul Green took his SK Bultaco to another win in the 250cc Junior with Bob W heat tripping over from Modesto to take second in a good battle with Bob Howell . This class remains the hot and heavy one with lots of riders and all too much action. Mertens rode around Brian Pecore and Mike Inderbitzen to win the 250cc Expert class and was well on his way to the 360cc Expert win , but on the final corner going for the flag, Delacy and' Mertens met and Jim slid on the low side. Delacy and his Yamaha World 360cc were going about the same way as Mertens and, along with little brother Mike on John McBrooms 360cc Yamaha. it was a dog fight with Mike passing twice but getting repassed by both brother Rick and Mertens. Exiting tum number four , Mertens' clutch lever got caught in Delacy's right leg leathers and he low sided . Rick thought Jimmy was shifting gears for him or something, but it was no one's fault and both knew it. When Delacy checked up on his b uddy. they were both grinning from ear to ear over another fine du el. Results in Results Section. "Magoo" highlites Carnegie Saturday MX LIVERMORE, CA, NOV. 19 Danny "Magoo" Chandler flew his UF O /KTM to two comefrom- be hind wins at Carnegie's first Saturday motocross. In the first moro of the 250cc Pro class Jerome Heiberger (Mai) grabbed the lead with Mike Hersman (Hus) and Magoo hot on his tail. The three ' began putting distance on th e rest of the pack with Heiberger looking good until he dumped it in a tum . Hersman took over the lead for two laps until Magoo decided he wouldn't settle for less than first. In a long, wide offcamber section Magoo went way above Hersman and flew all the way to the bottom to grab the lead. He held it for the rest of the race with Hersman taking second and Heiberger working his way ba ck up to third . In moto two Hersman shot to the lead with Magoo ri~ht behind and Randy Okada (Suz) In third . In the Open Pro class Curt Wilcox (Yam) won the first moto easily but had to work from behind to win the second. J oh n Roeder (Mai) rode two consistent races to get second overall. Troy Werner (Suz) won moto one of the 125cc Pro class from start to finish but moto two wasn 't that easy. Phil Crane (Suz) began putting on pressure after Werner got the holeshot and five laps later Crane took the lead. Bill Leonheart (Suz) , after finishing enjoy the ride. The course consisted of two 25 mile loops with half the ru n narrow trails and the other hal f flat out riding. Snow covered the entire course with up to eight inches in some spots. Racing was started with the riders facing their machines with the engines running. When the gun sounded, 42 competitors jumped on their bikes and headed off through the sage brush. The course alternated between slow and fast sections, through abandoned wheat fields and fire roads. The course was well marked and very few riders got lost. Kevin Bise (H us) took the lead just as the riders came in on the first loop. Faster riders were running the course in just under 40 minutes while some endu ro riders took almost two hours to ride the 30 miles. Kenneth Holmes (H us) took the Open class with a second overall.
