Fortune flies at " Corona halt mile By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA , NOV. 16 Steve Fortune turned a 22.59 second lap for fast time of the night on his way to victory in Corona Raceway's Money Half (A bove) Serious racing preva ils at A M E Minicross.(Below) Falls are a part of racing at any age. At least he fell in the soft sand. 20 .. looked ba ck. winning by a huge margin. Brandon Schneider took second in that class, and had a first place win in the Stock Juniors as well. There was some fast and furious racing in the 83cc Stock Intermediate class between Cindy Dumo on a Pesky's Suzuki, Louie Franco, and David Berlin's Holland Honda for the entire 45 minutes. Dumo led for several laps while Berlin and Franco swapped the second spot. When Dumo went down. Berlin "took over. Three laps later, Dumo moved back in front in the sa ndwash. Berlin was at her side as they rode past the tower, but Dumo hung on. Mark Chikasawa moved by Franco on the uphill sweep, and then past Berlin. Franco moved into second when Chikasawa went down in the first sand loop. In the last lap Franco took over in the sand to win the moto. The Junior Cycles rode 30 minutes on the International track. Charlie Taylor won the S~~~ Intermediate ._-- -.. . --- .-. --.- class. after a see-saw battle with Josh Price and Michael Knapp who finished third and second. A large class of Stock Pee Wees ran two four-lap motes, Charlie Butler, Kevin Sanford and Danny Lamb were the first three finishers . The second time it was Justin Souza. Butler. and Bobby Dlugos. The overall went to Butler. Gary Reichenbach finished first after 45 minutes of heavy racing in the IOOcc Motorcycle Juniors . Randy Pretzer, Mark Tomaselli and Barry Eckess all trophied behind Reichenbach. Willy Wright rode a super race as he led the 'Modified 83cc Intermediate. John Hemme, O rna r Greco, and Richard Ising fought from behind. Wright pulled off with only 15 minutes left on the clock due to mechanical trouble. Hemme took over to win . with Greco, and brothe r Rick Hemme finishing second and third. Results in Results Section. Mile . It was a wire to wire win for Fortune as he got off th e lin e first and d ial ed his big Harley on . Wayne Rainey had second with Steve Monger in third . The second lap saw Joe Steffen come from sixth place to fourth as he got by Shawn Leipold and Rich Volk. Danny Perkins was also on the move as he went from ninth to sixth. The front runners were ho lding solid but Perkins was still coming " as lap fou r saw him dispose of Leipold. One lap later he moved by Steffen to take over fourth. Fortune brought it home with Rainey second, Monger third and Perkins fourth . Jeff Allison and Joe Steffen had a good one in the TT Money. It was Jeff out on top with Steffen second and Fortune th ird. The second lap was all it took for Steffen to put things right as he passed Allison to take over the lead and go on for the win . Allison held on to second but Fortune got caught with his socks down as Leipold got by him to take the third. Allison fared much better in the Open Amateur/Expert TT where he led from start to finish . Eddie Drake had a firm lock on second until he made a m istake on th e fifth lap and both Pat Dobbins an d J im Redding were there to tak e advantage of it . W ith time running out Drake tried to come back. but it was not to be and he had to settle for fourth. Rich Volk and Steve Monger had a good go in th e Open Amateur/Expert Half Mile . Volk went out fast to tak e the lead with Monger right on his exhaust in second and Danny Perkins in th ird. The second lap saw Monger com e down low out of four , slip under Volk and tak e over the lead. It was now Volk's turn to play ca tch up, and tried though he did he couldn't outrun the Northern California rider and had to settle for second. Perkins held off Terry Singleton, Pat Dobbins and J im Redding for the show spo t. Many 250cc Experts were on hand , so two divisions were set up. "Speedy" Pete Hames , the Simi ace , got off the line first in Division I and never looked back. Scott Dinkins came off right behind him but had his hands full with Todd Brown who knocked on his door the whole eight laps. Dinkins was able to keep Brown in his place and collected the second. Chris Cannon, another displaced 125cc rider, did basically the same thing in Division II. Dorothy Rowe came from off the pace to pick up second over Greg Bookout. Cannon pulled it out of the fire in the 250cc Amateur/Expert TT. Jeff Allison had the lead and seemed on his way to victory but mecha nical - problems took him out two la ps from the end. Chris Cannon who had been chasing him the who le time was more than happy to take over with Jeff Johnson second and Eddie Dra ke third. Bobby Garabedian continued to roll along in the 125cc Amateur/Expert as he collected wins on both the TT and half mile over Rodney Rainey. Results in Results Section. Sean Gilboy won t he 83cc lntermediate Stock class at t he Turkey race , J Bowers tops U.S. Minicycle Turkey" Race By Carol Campbell ELSINORE. CA , NOV. 27 , Prizes and turkeys offered to all winners brought riders from as far away as Las Vegas and Phoenix to ride U.S . Minicycle's Turkey Race. J Brent Bowers took ba ck -to -back wins in th e Junior Stock and Modified class, but not withou t a battle from Sean Fra mpton. When the gate dropped on the second and fin al mot o , it was Frampton who got th e holeshot with Bowers close behind. Frampton started pulling away until he faltered going uphill . Bowers flew by only to hav e Frampton take it back in a tight turn. n Frampton held on to th e lead until he was confronted with th e same hill that was his downfall on the previous lap. Aga in . Bow ers took th e opportuni ty to pass. It was handlebarto-handlebar through the Svturns to the checkered flag with the overall win going to Bowers with a I-I tot al. { Sean Gilboy did some fine rid ing on his new Suzuki RM80 in the 83cc Stock Intermediate class finishing 3ยท1 to take first overall . He then went out on the same stock bike and rode the 83cc Modified class and finished fourth . Harry's Cycles' Allen Lucas made the 100cc Novice class look easy with two straight wins, even though the second and third place riders were breathing down his neck throughout the race. Lucas has decided to set liis mini aside and concentrate on ridi ng an RMI 00 full time. If today was any example of what he can do, he's made the right move . Mark Meredith, an Expert ' rid er from Arizona, decided to try his hand at riding the new U. S. Minicycle Association. "When practice was over , Mark liked what he saw and th ought he would like to become a member and to his surprise, he found himself with an armload of gifts for being the first member to sign up for the 1978 season.
