Nearly final- , . ized 'prototype versions of the Scott plastic. motorcycle boot have been test~ 10 t.he re~ent Trans·AMA MX Sen.es by nders hke. LaPorte, Hannah, v.;e1Oert and Wols1Ok. The new boot seems t? work. extremely well , and production versions ~re expecte~ to be offered for sal e during the spnng of 1"978. Leather boots have ne~er ~eally done .e':l0ugh to . protect nders ~eet from 1OJury. But It s taken a long time for people to . cha':lge their ideas on ~hat a safe dirt bike boot should b,e like , and even now most people don t want to ch.ange. . Heckel introduced the first plastic t , and though I use them and feel he:(re the best motocross footwear vailable , they never have been very opular because n.one of the top tars .. . othe~ than JIm Pomeroy and aston Rahle~.: . ~ them . Tales. of elated knee mJunes and not being ble to "feel" the brake and shift lever ,ere part of the problem. Scott esigne? their boot to counter all the omplamts. • "The Heckel isn't really a plastic Doot," explained Scott boot project engineer Scott Boyer. " It 's actually a leather· plastic laminate boot sewn together . The Scott boot is 100 percent molded plastic simi lar to a motorcycle fender. "In each boot we use three different ypes of plastic to get three different flexe s. The hardest part of the boot is th e shin plate. The remaining upper part of t~e boot that wraps around your leg IS th e .secon d hardest . .The foot of the boot IS th e softest plastic so you can feel sh ifting and it will flex while walking. But it 's still plenty firm to resist injury. The toe area is su pe r hard like th e shin plate. The sole area of the boot that rides on the foot peg is a replaceable piece of non-slip rubber. "T he foot of the boot is pivoted f rom the upper portion t o offer forward . backward and lateral (sideways) movement to prevent ankle and knee inj uries. There are safety stops though so the lower portion can't ' rotate t~ far. If you r foot gets caught under the foo tpeg of the bike the lower portion will rotate just enough to keep you from getting hurt." Other advan tages of th e Scott boot is that it has no exposed buckles or catching edges. Adjustable latches snap flush with the side of the boot. Inside the boot is a waterproof liner with changeable foot sizes. . The shell of th e boot is built in two sizes: medium for sizes 7-8-9 and large for 10-11-12. Liners are changed to get the exact foot sizes. In addition to the Star Wars look of the Scotts. another neat thing about them is they weigh much less than leather boots. I test rode a p ai r an d found the m more com fort a b le than m y present H eckels while protection must be in creased tenfoldl The new Scotts won 't be cheap , about $150 , but replaceable parts will be available so your Scotts will ou tlast leather boots .
