I , ani happy to report my letter to the Raceway was answered by Les Richter ; via a phone call . Mr . Richter gave me some cPl o to rcyci e ban reasons which I L expected to hear. Such as the parents ~ h o bring a dirt bike for their .,u nd isciplined "rug rat ," gas it up and ~th en mentally proclaim "go away kid _a nd don't bother me." Richter also related some far more [serious incidents I did not expect ,to I hear. There were two deaths and a ~ e r m a ne n t disability in two years , ca used by persons entering the park •illegally after races. The track had to , d efe nd its elf against two lawsui ts , lwhich they won. Their insurer said get the situation under control or find a 'new insurance company. Thus the lp resent policy was put into effect. :I Mr . Dud is fast closing in on his _85th birt hd a y (next May) but has had a series of operations of late and now pends much of his time in his . a part m ent in San Francisco. ' Last September he missed the San )ose mile for the first time and last October he missed the Ascot National half-mile for the first time ever. r I am happy to report th at Dud sounded in good spirits on the phone and although he did not ask, I know "tha t he would like to hear from his 'legion of old friends and former ' associates involved in the motorcycle 'ind ustry and racing fraternity. '( Perhaps many of your readers have ~nevej- had the benefit of meeting and knowing Dud on a personal basis , ,r- hich is unfortunate , as this man has w done it all in the world of motorcycling. ~Whether you know him or not r feel that he would get a big kick out of a card or letter.
