NORTHERN DATELINE SHR MX: Sidow takes two By Tom Anderson BRENTWOOD, CA. NOV . 11 In the first division of 125 Novices Brian Flinn finally put a two moto win together for his rophy. Flinn had some problems with his knee the last couple months and just recently came back to racing. At the beginning of our point system Brian was leading for some time. He had a battle tonight as Ed Ellis pushed hard to get around but couldn't. Mike Sidow won both motos also in the second division of the 125s as well as taking the win in the trophy dash. Second place went to little Dave Rodriquez . T he 250 Novices had some good racing with Michael Krebs shutting down all the competition of Art Aorvath who rode close to Mike's tailpipe but had to settle for second. The first Open Expert race was fantastic! Frank Gillespie, who is tuning up to get back on the AMA circuit, got the holeshot with Jim Foley right on his tail and back in third Phil Anderson was playing the fox . These three dueled together back and forth . Anderson was trying both as he was setting them up. He passed Gillespie and took after J im Foley. He caug h t Foley and passed, held on and won the first moto. Foley grabbed the secon d moto lead with Anderson hot on his ta il but Jim had Phil's line and Anderson had to settle for second with John Proto third. Results in Results Section. Marker manages first Hillside G.P. By The Squisher MO SES LAKE, WA, N OV. 13 Jim Ma rker took over the m anagement of Hillside MX track and treated the riders to a grand prix with 45- minute m otos for every class except the 0·60cc minis. , Each class ran one moto, so it was a do or die effort for the riders. Hopetownstyle starts were used to speed up the program, letting A , Band C riders compete together in several classes. Allen Rush (Yam) had the track , wired as he pulled the holeshot and steadily held a comfortable lead over a fast class of Mini Pros. Jack McGill (Yam) and Ross Learn (Yam ) had the speed of Rush but couldn't match his consistency. At the end only Rush and Learn were running strong, with Allen nabbing first and receiving a trophy taller than he is. Three classes of 100s were started together with 'R oss Learn (Suz) scooting out to an early lead. Ph il Larson (Sui) followed closely. Mike Cal houn (Suz) ran first B rider as he held third overall. Next came Dale Holcomb (Suz) , cruising to an easy win over C riders . Larson , riding three classes today , swept pas t Learn midway through the moto to take the win by a comfortable margi n . The best come-from- behind ride had to be from Barry Blevings (Suz) as he put on a charge from way back in the pack to narrowly squeeze past Mike Calhoun on the last lap . The 125 Pro class had the best riders in the state competing as they fought for a share of the $2000 purse. Pat Jacobson (Suz) pulled another of his holeshots, proving that he was the master of the rough , sandy track . DeWayne Marker (Suz) , Bill Joyce (Suz), Bill Jones (Yam ) and Jim Anderson (Hon) followed Pat as they fought for second. Gary Racca (Yam), the Northwest's number one rider , started in seventh and began a fantastic charge toward the front This was stalled early in the race with bik e problems. Bill Jones was also flying as he closed on the leaders , only to be forced out With mechanicals. The bes t racing of the day was between Bill Joyce and DeWayne Marker as Bill tried unsuccessfully to pass on every part of the track. Bill was finally able to make the pass with just minutes left in the race. DeWayne put on a strong charge at the end but fell short. Joyce (Suz) timed the start j ust right in the 250 Pro class and sq uirted into a short-lived lead over 17 of the top Northwest pros. Pat J acobson (Suz) and Gary Racca (C·A) came next with Phil Larson (Suz) holding a n edge over Blaine Elledge (Hus). Joyce laid his bike down in a comer early, letting J acobson into a lea d which he held to the finish. Gary R acca easily held third p lace until the shocks on his Can Am froze up. Bla ine Elledge took advantage of Racca's misfortune to move to third overall. Results in Results Section. l' 1-0 Q) ..c . Carter IT's WilseyVille hare scrambles By W . H. Spencer WILSEYVILLE, CA , NOV. 13 Chris Ca rter a nd hi s factory- : supported ISDT Ya m a ha made an all to o d usty track look easy, putting his name on the fam ous sweepstakes trophy that makes the Polka Dots M .C . h are scrambles one of the real races you just have to win . Carter dueled throughout with Rick Hocking on a Knight-fabricated TT 500 that he rode in the O lym piad , but R ick's lu ck still prevails on the poor side. He was eliminated from the second place because of alleged course cutting. He definitely wouldn't be the only rider who left the "established" trail because the dust left very little option for the rider who wanted to go fas t. Last year , this race was postponed because of the drought that still grips the area and it was a brave and hearty soul who made three laps. Taking the third overall and first Open Junior was Eddie Diaz on a Karl's Motors IT400 with a very inspiring ride by the young man whose dad is well known in two-day qualifiers. Diaz kept very consistent times throughout and . his improved riding ability may keep papa Frank by the hotdog stand and give the kid a chance at the big time. Lance Beauchamp tried his best to keep Diaz in sight but crashed, taking seco nd over Mike Spratt while John Hampton took the novice portion over Bill Hardwick and Merritt Moore . Carter's win was a good one when on the last lap , just before the gO-minute time. lim it , Hocking came in for lap four and pitted for fuel just as Carter came through the check and buzzed by as big Dave Souza screwed the ga s ca p back in place and yelled to gas it. Rick gassed it out of camp the wrong way , saw he was wrong and corrected but the people around the area were look ing for blood and started screaming about cheating while it was obvious that Hocking over corrected and lost time on a line that really isn 't illegal. About two m inutes back were Rich Buttner and Gary Vanderpool loc ked in their own battle and it may well be a thriller, for the season's battle over number one isn't over with Carter and Vanderpool still in a chance to beat the cu rrent plate holder Buttner who won the 250 class last year to take home the p late. Buttner took the second after Hocking's d isqualification with Vanderpool another 30 seconds behind . Phil Rice was distantly in fourth and Terry Gough , last year's winner in this class a very disturbed fifth . Dave Morgen and the Nelson Bros. Husky are the hot 250 Expert rage with Dave winning his second straight D·36 hare scrambles in a row . He took the lea d about halfway through the first lap from Dean Joyner and Alex Jorgensen and was never seen, much less headed . Jorgy's Can-Am was wellprepared but just couldn't get it going. Alex kept the second spot throughout whi le Joyner kept eyebrows raised as he kept up consistent times on t he R edwood Cycles Suzuki. For the third straight yea r Eri c Harvey devastated the 125 Expert class. Cloyse Holland, Jr. was playing catch up on the middle two laps and closed the gap down to a minute or so by the last but the little Husky seized in one part and he had to slow it back . down to take the second for the only 27
