On the second lap Danny Perkins took Lewis to move into third while Gleason continued to set a super fast pace. When the checkered came out it was all Gleason with Rainey second and Perkins third. The half mile was a heartbreaker for Rainey. He was leading with Fortune in second and Gleason third . By lap two. Gleason had taken care of Fortune and was pressing Rainey. On lap five . Fortune lost another spot as Perkins moved into the top three . About the same time Jay Lewis also took Fortune who was having bike problems. Rainey continued to set the pace but on the white flag disaster struck: Rainey's bike blew and Gleason took over the lead and captured the win. Perkins was second 'a nd Eddie San Roman had enough for third . Danny Perkins had his hands full in the Open Amateur/Expert half mile because Dorothy Rowe is reall y starting to cook on her big 750 Yamaha . Danny did take the lead off the line with Gary Pettis and Dorothy behind him . It took Rowe only one lap to take care of Pettis as she poured the coal to the big bike and she was after Perkins. Perkins, not about to be a gentleman and let ladies go first , held the lead for the win. Joel Windham came from last to pick up third . Pete Hames and Chris Cannon shared the 250 Amateur/Expert honors. Chris put his name on the short track from the drop of the flag despite all attempts by Rob Selvy to change the outcome. Wayne Rainey, Charlie Summers two to one at Corona triple header By Elaine Jones CORONA. CA , NOV . 6 In spite of the rain the ' day before, a good turnout of flat trackers made the scene at Corona and were treated to a full afternoon of racing. Wayne Rainey started things off with the pro boys as he battled Charlie Summers for the short track win. It was Summers off the line first with John Calicchio in second and Dennis Briggs third. Rainey was running fourth in the catch up position. By the second lap Rainey had picked up two spots and was running second to Summers. It took Rainey two more laps before he was able to get by Summers and drop him to second. With five more hips to go his work was not over yet as he still had Summers right behind him looking for a mistake . It never came and Rainey had the dough with Summers second and Briggs third. The Money TT had Summers written all over it as 'he got the jump off the line and went for it. Dennis Briggs who had had an easy time of it in the heat found Summers hard to even keep in sight as he struggled to keep Steve Fortune at bay . He almost made it but coming out of four on the last lap, Fortune dropped low, came out fast and nipped him a t the line. The Money half mile , the primo event of the day, saw Rich Volk blast into the lead followed by Rainey and Fortune. It took Rainey one lap to take over first but it was not a comfortable lead with Volk riding double with him and continued to do so all 10 laps . Steve Fortune kept a safe distance in third hoping that Rainey and Volk would burn each other out. Volk didn't go home empty-handed as he flat ran away from Earl Roloff a nd Pat Dobbins in the Open Amateur/ Ex p ert half mile .
