Dave J ones got passed by a n Allied Su zuki ridden by first Trail NOvice Dan Theel. 'J Once in th e big wash before th e ro llers, Open Beginner Ron Baker, Ron Kandt and Mike Stephen got back by but Theel kept a head on his two hot co m pe tito rs, Oren Beck an d Cliff Thomas, three b ikes back. The stra ight sh ot to a nd beyond th e pipeline roadcrossing m a d e Mike Ste phe n, Dick Eva ns , Lee Midgley and J ohn Cline quite pleased . This was th e first tim e they had a cha nce to sit do wn for wh at seemed quite a whil e . Heading up th e long, fast sandwash , the fir e. road segment , the kn oll a nd the windy fast sandwash , Miller was stoked but silently pleading for his bik e to stay together . Bill Mossman could see Miller's dust but couldn't close the gap . Up and down th e wid e rises with th e fun windy trail , th e sudden abrupt shelves , then the long dust pocked fire road befoi e turning left in to th e flat area . Chuck Short , Brad Hunsinger, Chris Michael and Mike Stephan got the check , crosse d the flats int o the gold stubble and th e d itches a nd on to Garlock Road . The racers wound down the sa ndy access road th en filtered int o the pits. The first on e .loop fin isher was C bik er Mike W alter's then fir st Trail Novice Dan Theel , first 250 Beg inner Matt Bishop, second T ra il Novice Oren Beck , Cliff T ho mas right behind for third . James Short was next , and first Beginner Heavywei ght foll owed seco nd Henry Ogilsby, 250 Beginner Dennis Lovell , John Hura second C , Bruce Walters th ird. Dahleen Dorman first girl , Sandy Love secon d . Firs t Trail Beginner Bob Charters, The tracks were a welcome sight as the novic es h eaded b ehi nd th e mounta ins up th e canyon , down the gnarly downhill and into the roll ers for th e last tim e. Crossing T ro na, Diane Elias and Kathy Hopkins had a real ra ce going. Jay Cordary and Kenneth Nicols' were glad they were ahead of the girls, they don 't like to get invol ved in wom en 's battles. DuRay Endlich , Mike Cockrell, Frank DeMarco a nd Mark Nelson had a ' drag race up the long wid e wash , Lou Ortali and George Yule diced back and fort h for eighth overall , Ortal i fin all y getting by Ge orge , m aking up 18 positions to do it. J ohn Clin e , now in th ir d overall spo t wound d own the sa ndy road towards th e fin ish , Bob Miller was ac ross the road and heading ' for the c he cke r ed , first ' ove r a ll , firs t IOpp. page) Charlie Hamill leapt from the rocks to take first "C" Expert. Everyone enjoyed th e ra ce , everyone was gra tefu l th e wind stopped Sunday.
