The Suzuki of Pomona rider had it for a few laps, {b u t "Little John" Ha teley passed him to take fourth at the finish , behind Br eker , Chandler and Zahrt. Tony Wanket (Yam) passed Denton for fifth , Atw ood was seventh and Dennis Brand (Suz ) was eighth. Moorewood DNFed and Roger Jones dropped back in the pack. Shaun Kell y (Suz). from Houston . ~ TX , holeshot the second moto. This time Zahrt was the first one by, r a h hough Breker was past Kelly before eth e completion of one lap. Magoo was fourth , Denton fifth , Brand sixth , . Hateley seventh and Wanket eighth. Chandler disappeared from fourth on the following la p . His berserk reputation had preceded him , but , th ere was no place worse on the course for it to catch up with him than in the ~D i rt Diggers mudhole. Magoo crashed there and dropped to sixt h. Zahrt led for most of the moto, but ; Breker passed two la ps from the end to make his win as profitab le as possible, -'since the purse was paid according to each moto finish as well as the overall finish. As the moto conti nued Denton rp assed Kelly for thi rd , and Chandler was already around Brand on his way 'b ack up to the leaders. Wanket 'followed Chandler past Bra nd , and a lap later they both got in front of Kelly . 13 On the last lap , with Breker and Zahrt occupying the first two spots, Chandler made it by Denton for th ird , as d id Wanket for fourth. Denton was fifth , ahead of Brand , Kelly , Hateley, .• twood and Eugene McKenzie (Hus) . The overall order went : Breker ( 1· 'l } , Zahrt (3 ·2), Chandler (2·3) , Wanket (5 ·4), Denton (6·5), and !la teley (4 ·8). !16~ a Pioneer Race Dick Man n , on a Dick Mann Specialties- framed TT500, won the " Pioneer" race , held to reunite some famous names from the past as well as a cou ple of present·day pioneers. John Rice (KTM) gave Mann a hard time in the early laps, but soon dropped out of it and Mann ran awa y with the ra ce. Feets Minert (BSA ) ran well until he came to a stop at the top of the uphill . On th at note, Mike Goodwin , th e Supercross entrepreneur, took over second on his Husky 390 Automatic and held it to the fin ish . Bryon Farnsworth (Kaw), Jerry Willingham ( Bu l) and Bill Friant ( KT M) co m pleted the top five . Old TImers Race Mann came back to win th e Old Timers race , an event competed in , scored and checked by the Old Timers MX Assn. Aga in John R. gave Bugs y a hard time, holding the lead for awhile during the early laps. Mann hung in there and eventually finished with a secu re lead over John R . , Blackie Lew is (Mai) and Doug Arc hibald (Mai) . One of the more unique aspects the Old T im ers race was the generosity of one rider , Manny Dau ber. Manny splashed in the lake alongside the mudhole and ended up giving his 250 Elsinore to Louie McKey, who helped drag it out of the water. Racing World operator Ron Hendrickson offered a case of Coors to any unfortunate soul who wound up in the drink. There were several takers . 500 Junior/Expert race Larry Roeseler had been held winless on Saturday, so he responded by coming from the second row to take the 500 Junior/Expert lead in the second turn. Craig Adams (KTM) was second as they prepared to finis h the first lap . Near the s pectator undercross, Larry stalled the 390 Husky, and while he was searching for neutral , Adams took the lead. That lasted less than a lap. Roeseler won with a good lead over Adams , Dave Caspary (Mai), Wayne Martin (Yam) , John Fero (Yam), and Tim Sarien (Yam). Wayne Allen was the first junior at 10th overall. __ Michael Hair (Yam) was the wireto-wire leader in the 500 Novice class . Da vid Kohn (Su z) and Jim Caspary (Ma i) were early challengers, but after they dropped back, Eric Burney (H us) mo ved in to take second , followed by John Wozniak (CZ ) , Mark Force (Yam) and Rocky Huish ( Ya m ). Earl Roeseler preceded his son's successful example by winning the Senior class , lea d ing all the way. Dick Camp (Yam ) was seco nd, ahead of Bruce Lewellyn (Yam) and Earl Carpenter (Yam) . Gary Deckert (Yam) was the first novice at fifth overall. J ohn McCown (ITI75) didn't quite make it to ninth; at the finish, Little Kooki e was a nose in front of him . Women's Race rea lly worked ; there was a BMW competing , as well as a CCM motocrosser. Bu t nothing Japanese. Joh n Ba rnes (Tri) led the first few laps, until Cummings passed him in the mudhole. Frank Brewer (Tri) was third, Bill DeMichele (Tri) fourth and Bill Hair Sr. (Tri) fifth. The chap above the 500 Indian, and underneath all the feathers, claimed not to be the Phantom Duck of the Desert. "He talked me into it.
