IBelow right) The Ken Maler/Randy Langosh t eam exits the mudhole. This was the view 250 Pro competitors had of Goat Breker at the end of both motos. Ma rt in , he was th e first person to endo int o th e mud hole. 101·125cc Novice race The first tu m of this 45 ·minute race clai me d three rid ers , none inju red , all got going. First five su rvivors leading the upshift ing horde of scre am ing bikes were Steve Silver (Suz), Dennis Vorndran (Yam). Dan Westergaard (Su z), Brad N ivens (Ya m), and Sterling Hopson (Yam). The next two riders to disappea r over t he hill were both mounted on Hondas : Re id Rondell and T im Sisson . Coming off the downhill . Ma tt Kincaid got sid eways on the second dropoff and stu ck in the dirt like a dart. He gets the determination award because once he got everything together . he took off at a ra pid pace. Honda m an Shawn Tullis started mo ving up fr om 14th spo t and by the halfway point he was ninth. Da ve Schoenky. running 20th by la p two was IOth in a matter of five laps. By th e three- q ua rt er mark gu ys like Billy Quaney, Bill Farrow, Ma rk Zela and Doug Johnson knew th ey wer e not winning it, but they never let off th e gas ; real com pe titors. The checkered flag unfurled and Danny Westergaard ch alked up on e of the more im pressive wins of the day. Brad Nivens was next followed by Gerold Fasold, Sterling Hopson. Dave Stewart , Bill Peterson and Chris Duncan . 101-125 Amateur Coming out of the first tu m it was Rick Stupin (Yam), Mark Sirota , Ron McRae . Merle Dooley. Bill Jewett . Mark Manley and Steve Vin cze. By the time the racers reached th e bottom of the hill below th e plateau, Bill J ewett had the lead. Postions five through 10. it was 50·50 - half dese rt rac ers. ha lf motocrossers. Vincze (Ya m) MX . Robin Busse (H us) dez , Carey Steiner (Yam) MX . Phil Gorgone (Suz) dez, Bill Boyer (Suz) MX and 10th Rick Da vis fro m th e desert. T he ra ce finished with Ma rk Dooley (Su z) t he winn er , Chris Hackman (Ya m) a nd Ron McR ae (Ho n) rounding ou t the top three. 101-125cc Expert Japan has not only invaded th e motorcycle ind ustry, th ey hav e also invaded t he racing ranks. Ask Tom Rutten . Dan Dobbins, George Lu th er and a few of the gu ys who found it im possible to make any ga in on a gu y named Gregg Toyama. Sue Fish had the spotlight due to the fact she uses a differ ent rest room than us guys do , but still wanted to race with the fast dudes. Bu tc h Da rling was nerv ou s prior to the event. He hadn't raced in a while, and co ul d n' t fi n d a b igger countershaft sprocket for top end so he figured the guys were going to smoke him in th e flat -out a reas . La rry Roeseler was being razzed about Su e Fish smokin' him , so when the green flag dropped Roesel er proceed ed to slide ou t. J eff Watt s (H us) took t he lead wit h Gregg Toyam a (Suz) second and foxy m iss Fish (Yam) sailing along in th ird. By th e start of lap three, Toyama took th e lead for good . Scott Ca rn a han (Yam) and Bill Barlow (Yam) managed to ge t ah ead of th e "fl yin' Fish" bu t that was all . Heading up the long uphill past th e start , everyone watched as Roeseler started closing th e door on Su e. He d id it all righ t, but in th e sandwash section he oversmoked a berm and Su e swished by while Larry was sea rc hi ng his Husky for neutral. T o wat ch Gregg Toyama is a pleasure hard to describe. Sm oo th , fast , and fla wless. Second place Jeff W at ts is just ab out the same. Toyam a sai d after the race . " It was th e first of m y ca ree r and 1 could have rid de n all day it was so bitch in ." I gu ess that sums up the riders' opi nion fair ly well. Sidehac ks 1 guess the evil in us all comes to t he surface when you see the rac ers /hack riders come to th e line as clean as if they just stepped out of Malcolm 's show window, knowing th ese gu ys a re going to be mudballs and worse in a matter of m inutes; and the crowd j ust can't wait for it to happen . Aft er t he first la p, Bruce Bu tt erfi eld a nd Ph il Zemke (Due) were in sixth spo t when they met Ron Hall and Ken Mea ter (Gre) at the mudhole. The Du cati ga ng bellyflopped th eir rig rig ht next to t he Greeves hack , passing th em of cou rse, but no t befor e ca using a tidal wa ve of mud engulfing Hall and Meater. Suzon and Clark (Hon) wer e holding 10th . Whitney a nd Gooledge on a Norton had 11th . John Palfreyman and J oe Gardner (Nor ) had an excellent lead - in fact th ey didn't share it with anyone from sta rt to finish . Burns and Burns on a Yama ha rig had a rea l battle going with Ken Ma ler and Randy Langosh (Yam) and the Glen Mitch ell -R on Seydel (Ho n) com bo. Well , th e hacks surv ived th e course, th e mudhole, and th emselv es . Duane McPowell a n d Rich ard L. (Tri) bagged second . Bart Cr a ndall and Ron Swa rt (Tri) third. Tw o views of M agoo: clean lbelow) and after th e mudhole fall labove). 7
