(Voicesfrom page 4) Tell a frien d ,Papa Wealey had it right when he said in his column that'we readers and lookers at motorcycle periodicals are a rare breed. How many times have we worried desert riders and racers approached a friend to find out if they had written a letter to the BLM . White House. etc . about a certain land closure, only to hear . "Closu re? What land closure?" So it's up to us. the rare breed, to inform our riding and racing companions and urge, even push them to write. P.S. Sue Fish. keep your ch in up . You can do it. ALAN SMITH Hermosa Beach. CA DIRT HALF~MILE Hooray for f aster enduros According to Mike Kinsella 's coverage of the 31st annual Cowbell Enduro (Cycle News Nov . 2) the Hayward M.C. put on a challenging run, bu t the speed averages were too high, so that District 36 enduro ace George Hendrix scored a 10 to win overall. instead of his usual zero . All I can say is, it 's about timel Maybe California enduros are on thei r way to m a tching the tough tests of riding skill common everywhere else in th e U.S. In Championship Enduro . the book photographer Brian Pa lormo and I have put together, which is being published this month , four -time national enduro champion Richard Burleson has this to say about it: "A zero enduro just means the course. wasn't laid ou t right . Either the checks were in the wrong places and theydidn't catch you , or the time schedules were too slow. I'd rather see a 100po inter, myself, or an enduro where I was the only one to fini sh. " Dick admits he likes hard riding more than timekeeping. But all you computerized enduro jockeys take note - Burleson dropped onl y one point in the two-day , SOO-mile Greenhorn National this year, and he did his timekeeping on that southern California run with only a standard VDO speedometer, a watch and a route sheet! Faster, more challenging enduros are tough on new riders, that's for sure. Som etimes you're lu cky just to finish within your hour. STEVE BOOTH Lafayette, CA ! C. There is little or no room in the sport of m otocross for over re -acting "little league" type parents. After spending the better part of today in the scoring booth I was shocked and appalled by the lack of manners so many adults ' ha ve. No wonder they have rude children. The majority of people today did not ask, they demanded . The few and far between who said "T ha nk you" were refreshing. One parent came into the scoring booth and was seemingly upset with what she thought was incorrect scoring. Later she was back with an apology. Thank you Mrs . Walker. If you as a parent or rider feel you can run a sanction as efficiently as the CMC folks do, just try it , and try a lit tle kindness. too .
