I got to take a 15-minute fling on G ary's 370 which I figured to be the -n icest of the two bi kes with its Simons forks .and nea t looking pre, producti on u p p ip e. With its ' reedval ved cylinder t he engi ne responded beautifully with lots of b ro ad , usable , to rq uey po wer from nearly idl e right on up the powe rba nd . T he transmission wo r ke d well , but lik e m ost Eu ropean bikes the shift throws a re fa irly lo ng and it tak es a little ge tt ing used to after Ja pa nese b ikes. It certainly wo u ld be co m pe titive on today's Na tio na l or International motocross ci rcuit. So what does this all prove? That a presently uncompetitive m o torcycl e ca n be made competitive with a lot of hard work a nd money? Certainly, and for a lot of Bult a co d eale rs and enthusiasts C ary Ba iley's m odi fications m ig ht j ust h elp ' them weather the present sto rm . For ot her serious ri ders who have no loyalties tho ug h , there are better race-r ea dy m ot ocross bikes availa b le whi ch would cost less and require hardly any preparation to be m ade com pe t itive. What Ca ry -Bailey wanted to do though , is show us what the new 1978 producti on Pursangs will be like an d wh at can be d one in th e meantime. " If the new Bultacos are as good as I .ex pect them to be , it will p roba bl y take all of 1978 just to try an d bu ild back up the reputatio n they once had , but the new b ikes will be good eno ugh that they sh ould be ab le to do it.
