Clark's Branch opener tires 'em out By Lynne Di ltz ROSEBURG, OR, OCT. 9 Clark's Branch Motocross , the natural terrain track six miles south of Roseburg, opened its season to a bunch of new faces and the biggest crowd in three yea rs. fourth , again behind Jodry. Vosick had the second spot. After a few laps Hersman started dropping way back while Vosick and Jod ry continued to the end fini shing second and third behind Cantaloupi. Weidman whips East-West Challenge race number three By Sue Sykes PUYALLUP , WA , OCT. 16 , Husky-mounted Rick Weidman was top Open Pro in East- W est Challenge Race three. Weidman did his thing in mota two, leading 26 all the laps and taking the win . In moto one Mitch Simmons (Suz) held the lead for a lap, playing follow th e lea d er with Weidman and Ba rn ey Ne wm an (Hus) . Weidman too k over for a cou ple of laps before N ewm an jum ped out int o the lead to take the flag. Cascade Cycle's Randy Sch weizer moved up to take second. Bill Jo yce , Burien Suzuki pro, was the star of th e 250 class with wins in both motos , Second overall went to hard rid ing Ron Pomeroy (Suzj .; Duane Marker did a super job for the day with a 2-5 score. Marker (FMF Suzuk i), pa ying his roo kie dues as a Pro, ha s go t it a lltogether . Mini pro Joel Strub on an R /S came from a mid -pack start in moto one to get a ro und Co ry Klaudt and Richard Shewmaker befor e th e flag . Klaudt pushed it all the way in moto two for t he win . Resu lts in Results Section . All of last season's lead ers were there, but Open class winner Roland Miller is sidel ined with a knee injury from last summer that m y keep him out of competition permanently. Thirty-five 125 Juniors, were split int o two divisions. The first 17 off the line found the off- camber turn and downhill a bit crowded. Rod Huffman got u nder Ken Skou and David Carter on that first turn to settle behind John Silvers , who had gotten the holeshot to first. Huffman passed Silvers in lap two and maintained his position through the res t of the 15-minute moto . Lynn Tompkins, Fritz Ma rt in .. Ron Hartsfield and Blake Do ud had a race all their own in the middle of the pack and finished in that order. Sil vers played a wa iting game , pacing himself the seco nd tim e out and passed M ik e H u ffm a n j u s t m inutes before the last lap . J eff Tunno found the dry surface hard to ta ke when he pil ed up in th e pit turn , allowing Eddie Cou tt s, Steve Hu nt and J ohn Silva around. The secon d di vision of 125 J uniors produced more action than p lanned. Jay Collins left th e track wit h a sick bik e. Jim Cum pston , Mike McK im and Rick Rice co uldn't seem to get a ro und the pit berm witho u t incident . Vic Lil ya , up fr om the 100 Kids Class, work ed his wa y from fou rt h to first a nd th en , hal fway th rough the moto, lost his pipe: leavi ng th e figh t to Bruce Guert in , Steve Giles and Wes Rob ert s. Gu ertin held his slender lead for five laps and look ed as tho ugh he'd be first across th e line but Giles h ad othe r ideas . Giles went .h igh on th e side hill turn, took a shot off the berm th a t set him up for the ,do wn h ill jump where he p assed Guert in in mid-a ir . Gu ertin hung on but Giles made no mistakes. All expert classes ra n 20 m inutes and after ten laps. fou r riders in the 125 class sh owed t he ove rflow spe cta tor gallery what sta mi na really is. Leader Jim Thorpe took a na sty sp ill on the down hill a nd new expe rt Da vid Dense settled into firs t. Ra nd y Wing, also a cagey rider who paces '" g ~ Rick Yates took a second in the fi rst 250 Expert moto at Clark's Branch, himself, started next to last in the field of 15 and worked his way carefully to third pla ce. On the white la p , Wing got around second place David Reimer , who had dogged Dense all the way . The second ro und saw experts Robert Leftridge , Rick Bradley and Reimer com ing down in the same spot after the downhill jump. No one was inju red and all continued th e moto after untangling . Jeff Landrum overshot the front berm on lap two and flew around th e hillside track in a catch- u p run that took him all the way to first . First moto leaders finished well back and with a 4·2 , last year's junior Rick Huffman took a first , a 1·5 gave David Dense second and a 5-3 gave Treve Mc Reynolds third . Thirty 250 Juniors gave way to two groups. Last year's 100 Kids class entries Bruce Sm ylie and Joe Diltz fin ished 1-2 in first division of both motos of 250 Juniors. Loren King ( A P E Specialties) and Monte Estabrook ran both sets in close competition with Scott Christensen and Kyle McCaslin for the rest of the day's trophies. Marv Da vis, John Roberts and Doug Feldkamp finished the second 250 wave in that order after a close race t h at saw m any p osition changes through the 15·m inute moto . The second time around, Robert s dumped , his Yamaha in t he pit turn and , after capturing the lead ha lfway through the white flag lap. Gary Winger dropped his putter just two turns short of a victory. John Parrish had Ossa trouble all day and after holding a fourth for three laps , it gave up with a " bla h, " sendi ng Parrish to th e pits. Ken McCollough and Jay Clark had a race all the ir own both m ot es : Clark finished th e day on e point ahead of McCollou gh . 250 Expert Bob Connors (Ca n Am ) rode a super first moto fro m tenth to a flying first , only to overshoot t he d ownhill berm and end in a he ap with his win d knocked out on th e firs t lap of his seco nd moto. Last season 's to p 250 Expe rt , Rick Yates wen t int o the second half wit h a second to his credi t but came do wn wrong over th e last j um p and limped across in last pla ce. Mai comounted La rry Hooper got his bike going for th e seco nd half and walked awa y with th e win , leaving Randy Wing an d Jack Gulick to fight for second and th ird . Eight " eld erl y gents" vied for trophies in the Class for the Aged and Elmer Re imer cinched the 'top spot with two first s. Dovle McCaslin , the assistant superintendent at a local high school, worked out his frustrations on his new Yamaha . He tied with John Denny but the last moto pla cing ga ve him second, Den ny th ird , and John Doyle a fourth . bec ome almost unbea table a t Sand Hill. Big J im would p itch his Yamaha wid e open into a ll t he turns but Curt W ilcox and J im Foley were not about to give up . Both wer e charging hard on Hartbauer , but Big Jim would not let up and they fin ishe d in that order. The second moto was a completely different story , with C u r t Wilcox really on the gas as the final moto was to determine who would take the big bucks home. Wilcox , Hartbauer and Fole y wer e dicing it out for 12 super fast laps until Hartbauer went too wide and Wilcox took the win with Foley third, Curt King fourth and Dave Fa ria fifth . Open No vice first moto went to hard charging Mickey "Lane on the Bu lt a co from Pittsburg with Dave Stonebraker second and the other Lane brother Pat , on the Husky, third . These Lane kids are really chargers . Their second moto was just as exciting with brother Pat turning the tables on Mickey as they finished 12 with Yamaha rider Stoneb raker third . The 250 Novice class winner was you ng Gary Clements (Ya m) . Gary got a first in the first rnoto and second in the next to take the overall win with Art Aorvath on the Suzuki second and Greg Jensen third. But the hero of the night again was young Gary Johnson , who is an Intermediate. Gary is riding a 175 Ya maha and -eally got it tuned in to this track as I.e ran away with both rnotos. Gary reariy gets wit h it! In the Trophy Dash young Bre nt Dav is was on the gas wit h R ick Olson hot on his ,tr ail. Both were going full b ore all the way , but the local hero Brent took the win and the big trophy home. Brent also took third place in th e Mini Novice division . The 250 Experts were run with the 500 's and , as always , the quiet kid on the KTM was unbeatable. I've never seen anyone get close to Wes Morrell yet. W es won overa ll with you ng Joey Schlag second . I'm won deri ng where all th e "hot dog" 250 ex perts are . They may ha ve heard of just how fast th ese two are and are a fraid of getting showed up by W es a nd Joeyl Sunday powder puff Liz Powers on h e r H onda o u t- powe re d all th e com petiti on in th e interm ed ia te class . Winner in the novice div ision was Sand H ill heroine Andrea Williams. The raci ng team of Don Rich and his two sons m ade out like cham pions and Da d d y Don won the novice vet class with his son Da nny winning th e 125 Novice class. Danny went very fast on the Sunday track and looked like a real he ro. Brother R ich won the 'first m oto in th e 100 Nov ice but cou ldn't do as good in th e fin al moto . Dick Mann was out again with his DMS . But Steve Eddy on his Yamaha was a real competition for Mann and won both m otos. Dick had chain problems fro m the sta rt a nd didn't finish the day. On November 6 th ere will be $1 ,000 guaranteed pu rse for th e experts an d 50% trophies for a ll old tim ers. • Results in Results Section .
