I: Western hotline ~ Small entry for t District 37 IT By Maureen Lee ELSINORE, CA, OCT. 30 (j) I-< . q; ,.0 8 q; :> o Z 16 When the fog finally lifted riders were happily surprised to see a different track . The Gripsters M.C. track started in the infield and went up through a seri es of bends before turning back onto the track proper, then bent sharp right at turn one to go over not one , but two jumps. It was a super neat course and we onl y wish th e Gripsters had had a better turn-out . The day was short, nine races per round and every cla ss a moto. What's happening with District 37 races? Minis led the day off , with Ch ris Cannon, Ken Mcintyre, Jimmy Rosa and Darren Hulbert . scrapping. The third quarter point standings are out and Darren is th e number one mini , sixth in the standings. Still, Chris Cannon won the class with two firsts and a second. Darren was second with a first , a second and (ouc h) a sevent h, and Jimmy finish ed thi rd . Don't kn ow where 'you ng Robert Thompson managed to find so mu ch mud to fall in, but he found it some whe re. Ma ybe he plans on rid ing the Grand Prix this weekend and wanted to get used to mud before he hits the Dirt Diggers mudhole. Ken Mcintire was having a bus y day of it , rid ing both the mini and the 125 novice classes. He would come scooting into the infield as he got the flag in th e mini division , leap off that scooter and onto his 125 being held ready and wa iting. Ah , you t hl Ken was also leading the second moto when he fell com ing in to turn one, but bounced up and took off after th em again . Audie Milam won the class, desp ite doing no better than fourth in th e first moto , wh en Brian Burch , Danny Will iamson and Ken got out in front of hirn. . W illiamson had an exciti ng tr ip straigh t through th e middle of the infield on the sta rt of th e second mo to . Everyone else made the turn but he just continued on straight. Steve Polson won the 125 amateurexpert class, with Bud Carroll ever pres ent along with Jay Bales, who is alwa ys right there in th e front group every week. T ommy Walton really got with it for the second moto and shot for the lead, holding it right down to th e white flag lap when Steve took it away from him in th e ba ck sect ion . Hey you 250 amateurs, don't you know when a red flag comes out you either stop or damn near so? You don't grab handfulls of throttle and dash back into th e infield , you proceed slowly until you find out why that flag ca me out. Jay Bales won that 'class, although Dylan Neihart and Sam Burns did him in in the last mo to , Jack Smith turned in a good second round, but Jay, Sam , and Dylan finally got him. Did Jeff Springman think he saw the checkered flag on the white flag lap in the first moto of the 250 expert? Sure looked like it. He and Joe Steffen had been having at it all through the race and coming around turn one, Jeff slowed a bit, then looked back at the flagman and saw it was a white flag out there and wicked it on again . But Joe was still off and running. Steffen won the class three straight, even to the extend of doing wheelies down the back straight. Larry Birk wants the world to know that he now has a new Montesa , • L. ~" .. .. . '"_' " • • _, . _ ...... .... and brought it in th ird behind Bud Carroll. Our results didn't show full firs t names so rather than guess , we'll have to use initials in a .cou ple of insta nces. J. W indham in the 500 novice bash looked good , al though he had grea t competition from B. Wanbaugh and Dave Skirvin. The 500 expert cla ss, alwa ys d ear to my heart , was won by Don Grigsby but T -Bone doesn 't get handed that class on a platter. Steve Loomis made him work for it in the first round by getting off the line first , and Mike Montgomery really got into action last moto and won it . If it hadn't been' for some local pro talent ou t to hav e som e fu n th e expert big bore would not have been large enough for a class. Wha t's happen ing, you big bore riders? Bob Sanders won it. Second rnoto he an d Steve Fortune on the Harley that slung him off up north rec en tly , approached th e first and second jump side by side, with Fortune gaining the ad va ntage as they started down the ba ck straight. That's the kind of racin' we like to seel Often you could toss that proverb ial racing blanket over Fortune , Sanders and Ri cki e Volk . Farthe r ba ck , t he com petition betw een Bill Bartells, Steve Miller and Frank Sp angler was just as good. Next ra ce is November 20th. Old Timers MX: Marvin makes beautiful music By Betty Bird EDWARDS AFB , CA , OCT. 16 Marvin Olson, playing his favorite song with Maico music might not carry a tune well, but he sure has rhythm! Marvin was leading the Master band. but had to keep th e R's up to sta y awa y from M amoth Mast er Dave McCoy. Blackie Lewis, having suspension probl ems, blew his ba ck shocks and in the second mo to his fron t forks went. It was rough ridi ng, but the old pro rode it ou t for thi rd. Al Dennler , having bike p roblems, tried shifting his Maico on th e right side in the second moto and went into fourth plac e. Exper t Cal ' Browning sat on his KTM just like his easy chair for Monday Night Football. Cal picked all the right lines , making Edwards a I -I affair . Sam Jones went all out after Cal , and turned in 2-2 rid es. Bill Bird went for th ird. It was Dick Va rvel taking th e Amateur class today. Dick is back after a rest and ready to ridel Art McNamee, with a pa ir of seconds, stayed in th e trophy circle. Jim Jones grabbed third . Kid Coffman got the holeshot and fourth . The Novice class had a great turn out with three new members jo ining ' the ranks. Welcome Melvin Barnes, Ken Willis and Lowell Smith. Everette · ' . David Gerig (42) passed Brian Crazeon hisway to a win in the AMC Open Pros LJ at Carlsbad. u Hatler ende d up on top with Bill Barber second and Don Jensen In th ird. Resu lts in Results Section . Rumors nearly halt AMC Carlsbad NJX By Brian George CARLSBAD , CA , OCT. 16 Rumors and other miscellaneous talk can just about ruin anything. At AMC's Sunday Carlsbad motocross, the false tales of cancellation almost shut off the day's races . The right word of mouth had to be spread quickly, and with little help , Bette Lasker was able to draw enough riders to hold an event. The Carlsbad staff deserves a special thank you for their help in drawing riders . The track was in Grand Prix condition by the tim e the first moto was to be let off. One of the best tracks in Southern California was brought forth , and th e riders appreciated it by giving a great show for thos e in a tt enda nce . Profess ional action in the 125 class was fantastic as the riders put on consisten t rides, and beautiful tal ent was am idst the competi tion . FMF Suzuki star Cliff Lett was on hand to show everyone what he's got, and what he had was good enough to earn him ' th e overall win . As the gate dropped for the first round of action , Lett pulled everyone into the first turn , but Corki Moore wanted things a little d ifferent. Moore hung on to Lett for th e en tire race. Lapped riders in th e later part of the moto were all in favor of Let t as he used each rid er to put more ground between himself and Moore. In a vain attempt to rega in lost ground , Moo re went d own hard , but was abl e to recover in time to grab second place. Rick Wade cam e across in a distant third . In the second moto , things weren't quite as easy as last time. Lett pulled another holeshot and flew into th e first turn . Don Fuller and Rick Wade came out right on top of each other, followed by Moore. By the end of the first lap, Moore had taken third place and was nudging in on second. On the third lap Wade dropped out of the race, Lett began to stretch out his lead and Moore was right beside Fuller. These two went at it for only a lap as Moore proved to be a little too much for Fuller to handle. At the line it was Lett with the overall , Moore taking second and Fuller trailing in third. Doug Boyd put together two spectacular rides for the 250 Pro ' d ecision. As the gate fell for their first moto , Boyd grabbed the holeshot with' Joe Santich and Kurt Sofka righ t on his rea rfender', As they began to move! through lapped riders on the third lap , Boyd put on some exciting moves to get through the slower obstacles and leave them to Santich and Sofka. T he Three Musketeers could not have been an y closer than this trio of riders. At the line the positions held. A repeat of the first run was the setting in the second moto. Boyd grabbed th e holeshot for th e second time with Sofka and Santich aga in ' counting .his spokes. As the moto rounded towards th e end , Santich aii'd Sofka were going at it like th ey we e. brothers. As the duo entered slower traffic , Santich used two lapped riders to hi s adv antage . Placing them between the two, Sofka could not get around in time to catch Santich. Tlie overalls went to Boyd , Santich and Sofka. Open Pro action was th e most se~ saw race in th e past ye a r of competition. Chris Chaffee, Brian Craze , David Gerig and Dale Luedtke were th e only su rving riders in the first rnoto . In tight racing, Chaffee an d Craze went head- to- head for the ent ite race with Gerig right behind. Chafee held on for the win with Craze second and Gerig third . In th e second race. the only two to fi nis h we re Gerig and Lu edtke : Chaffee and Gerig wer e right on top of each other for six laps . On the lOtn l lap, Chaffee went out of th e race after dropping ba ck into third . Craze and Gerig were now left out in front . On 1 lap 11 Craze went down , returned on th e next lap , then dropped out for good . At the end of th e rac e, Gerig and Luedtke rolled across to a one-two overall finish . Amateur Adsit wins £1 Cajon I " D·38 race By Loretta Pipkin CALEXICO , CA , OCT. 23 Lemon Grove's Roger Adsit , riding Open Amateur, nosed out expert Pat Flanagan by one minute in El Cajon M.C .'s 92 miler held west of Calexico.
