Once through Big Jolin 's rock garden . the course crested a ridge dropping down in a small valley filled with tall green stu ff that resembled somebody's wheat field. Turning right and cresting a ridge, Earl Roeseler and his pet flat tir e held a marginal lead over Paul Christensen and his pet flat tire plus a few missing spokes. Kit Morgan followed the trail till it worked its wa y into a small sandwash. The wash gradually got bigger and bigger but so did the rocks, Once the wash emptied out of the mountains , the racers passed the trees that looked ike the ones in Parker , Arizona . Joel Quinn , Jeff Robbins and first amateur Dave Conner got their thrills flying into th e little rock sections scattered t h ro ughou t the deteriorating wash . Soon the gu~ were in some neat cross country stuff with a few good ditches to enable th e hardy ones to get· airborne. Paying respects to "Su zuki Art ," th e rac ers cr ested a saddleback rise and go t th e full view of th e back side of Victor Pass. Seeing this , Ern ie Mn oian , Ron Danley', Rick Jones and Allen Johnson gassed it just a little bit more m om ent aril y forge tti ng the bike swa llowing whoops wa iti ng for them at _ the pass. . T he crowd at the finis h line eyed Victor Pass as the AMA Trophy cup was filled with ice, keeping th e victory champagne chilled for t he winner. Bruce Ogilvie came in , th en a little later Bob Rutten riding a gr eat ra ce despite his still -sore foot and the loop two fouled plug. About 12 minutes passed before Terry Davis limped in with a flat. Then came crazy Tony Greaves. Bruce Lewellyn all stating this was the best course they had .ridden this year; the markings were outstanding. There was a lot of good riding done . today and many new tails to be told around the campfires. The welcome back award goes to Jim Fishback not seen since the Viking's race . The determination trophy is sp lit between Chuck Pettigrew, again, and out-ofstater Bob Powell of West Jordan , Utah. Chuck changed h is flat , . the replacement tire was a motocross one, causing 20 minutes down time; still ' finished 28th. Powell had a total of four flats . broke two shifters and -was on the last loop when I had to leave . The brand new "T ru e Grit" award goes to 19th overall racer Laddie King of Green River , Utah, riding in what looked like some old flat track leathers and ridi ng two loops with just sun glasses fo r goggles . The old " a w shucks" award goes to Dan Muller of Melba . Idaho , who was running 12th overall and missed his pit , running out of gas. The only reason I don't like to print th is is because I'm envious: Trudy Beck ra n out of gas twice and still fin ished 15th overall . The awards and praise cou ld go on and on . The Quote of the Week goes to Invader Big John W ilson . "Guys, we made Roeseler tired . I figure we did our job," Your Dez correspondent says you did an outstanding job for the riders ; the AMA and your own fin e reputation . Thank you Rescue -3 . Bill the snow cone man who donated th e ice for La rry 's trophy and t he Invaders who made th e job of writing th is story possib le. •
