In the far end of the track Wright disappeared from view with some apparent trouble, and Sanchez slid out in the sweeper long enough for Chikasawa to take over. In the second moto , Chikasawa led off the line. Sanchez kept the pressure on Ford, until he shot by him in the power turn . Ford kept right at Sanchez's wheel trying to get second back. It almost came about when Sanchez got wild in the esses, but he held on and gained ground on Chikasawa. As they ,;lpproached the hairpin , Sanchez took first from Chikasawa, but Chikasawa was back in front by the next turn. Sanchez poured it on in th e straight to take over again in the esses. Ford closed in on the battling duo. and got by Chikasawa in the corkscrew . Chikasawa moved back in front of Ford before they reached the tower , then they soared side by side heading toward the esses. Ford went high on the berm and shot by to finish second. The third moto found Wright with the holeshot, but Sanchez soon had the lead, followed by Ford and Chikasawa. Each rider held his ground until Ford went down. Sanchez was the overall winner . and Chikasawa second. Chikasawa came through in the modified class with a 1-1-1 ride . The Stock Pee Wees fought a hardy battle. with Warren Provost making a clean sweep . Charlie Butler (Sy Klops) rode a strong second in the first moto, The second time, Justin Souza (Brazil Motor Racing) held the lead with Provost breathing down his neck . Butler was trying to keep third away from Las Vegas rider, Frank "Ice Man" Buck. and Erik Herrera. As the trio rounded the sweeper. Herrera poured it on . taking the outside and < moving in front of Butler. Coming out of the corkscrew " Ice Man" had control of third . Provost managed to get by Souza before the flag came out. In the last moto, Provost and Souza swapped leads again. Buck had full command of third , and Bulter got by Herrera for fourth. Ellis-Szilagyi battle continued down to the wire. Frank Darr moved from midpack. first dueling with Gilbert Valdez. then with Walter Armendariz for fourth . Armendariz held him off until Darr went high in the esses to take the lead. Armendariz crashed trying to overtake Darr in the corkscrew. Paul Smith had a good hold on third for most of the moto, but Darr took it away with an outside sweep on the downhill. The second time out. Darr was plagued with bike trouble. Ellis had his share of problems too. but made a super recovery working from eighth to second. finish ing behind Szilagyi. In the last moto, Ellis repeated his perfonnance of the first , rocketing around in full command. Szilagyi and Darr fought for second, with Szilagyi the victor. Armendariz battled with Smith. while Valdez had his work cut out keeping Jason Wagner behind him. Bobby Wright nabbed the early lead in the first moto of the Sgcc Stock 12 and over Juniors. Adam Ford. Danny Sanchez and Mark Chikasawa scrambled in the power tum, with Sanc h ez moving int o second . Chik asawa got by Ford, taking the tak~ $1. ,000 CMC - CarlsbadMX By Patti Trotter I CARLSBAD, CA , OCT. 9 A lot of water and discing had the track at Carlsbad in super shape for the combined IRC Tire Company and DuraLube $1,000 purse race but by the end of the day the ground had returned to the usual SoCal " Blue Groove " terrain. Husky -mounted Mark White took the holeshot to begin the action for the . Open Pro riders. In the second tum there was a giant pile -up with many of the riders sitting in one of the huge mud holes. Bob Elliott (Suz). had a badly sprained ankle and was out for the remainder of the day. Luke Messer (Mai) was second with Robert Marino (Yam) next . White kept his machine wide open and led for nine laps. Wayne Boyer (Suz) worked his way up through traffic and on lap 10 tweaked White for th e lead-and the win . Messer finished third with Scott Miller (Yam ), - Marino. Chris Chaffee (Yam) and Rick Blackwell (Yam) taking the next points. Wayne Boyer blasted his Suzuki off
