OCT. 9 Mike Baeder nearly scored a "ha t trick" of wins at Willow Springs during Sunday's Manning Road Race. Only a holed 22 piston in his TZ-750 while he was leading Mike Hishiki (Hon) by 10 seconds in the Open Grand Prix prevented it. Earlier he beat Ron Hlavka (Yam) by five seconds in the 250 GP event. with Tony Murphy third on a factory-prepared watercooled 175cc Can -Am. Baeder also edged Hlavka by a few feet in the Match Race. Dick Kilgroe (K_aw) cru ised to an easy victory in Open Production, but Billy Addington (Mo ro -Ou zai) and Chuck Parm e (K aw ) took turn s gnawing on each other's rea r tir e. On th e last lap Chris Tromley crashed at turn th ree. m om entarily b ringing ou t th e yellow flag , with Ad d ington using it to best advantage to grab second. Kilgroe would have won the Sup-er Cafe ra ce as well. but crashed without injury at over 100 rn.p .h , while exiting turn nine. halfway through the race. Some of the closest racing was in the smaller displacement classes. Mike Fleming (Yam). John Chermak (Yam). and Mark Sheldon (Yam) slithered around Willow's twisting 2.5-mile. nine -tum course nose -to -ta il for over eight laps. Sheldon's motor seized on the ninth lap , and Flemingpulled out - a few feet on Chermak to take th e win .Chermak (Berkeley Yamaha ) had better luck in the 200cc Product ion race . though , despit e desperate pursuit by Tom Ballantyne (RD· 200). To score his second straight victory, Tim Steinberger had to pass flin e riders after getting a poor start on his Cens Yamaha in the 200 Grand Prix . Jo ~ Slobom (Suz) and Ballantyne (Yam) collided while battling for . second . but both miraculously managed to stay upright. Results in Results Section. . OCT. 2 An alter ed Shad ow Glen track turned into a surprise party for tight track as though he were riding a 100. going 1-1 for his usual first place. Rathole Rocky (Yam), never gave up trying to catch Larry. and went 2·3 for a second ahead of Stubby Steve. Corroded Carlos and Dippy Del. Amateur Delicate Dennis (Yam) who won the 125 trophy. going 1-2 in his moros while Ruptured Rusty (Suz) and Miss Mike {Mai ) did their own thing . The intermediates. almost always the . la rgest class, consisted of 16 hungry-looking racers. Front-runners in the first moto , Chunky Chuck. Dimples Dan and Lewd Lou did a multiple get -off which allowed Scabby Skip to pilot his Montesa up front and finish first. Slimy Steve (Yam) slipped into second with Nauseous Norm (Kaw) and his green machine grabbing third . Although Chunky Chuck (Can -Am) finished first in the second moto , he took a fourth overall. -Novice Droopy Dick (Yam) finished first in moto one, but had to settle for second overall when Cute Connie (Mai) went 2·1 to win . Chiseler Chuck (Yam) was third in both his rnotos for a sol id third overall. Buggs Bill brought up fourth. Results in Results Sect ion. Ripley rips DeAnza By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD , CA, OCT. 9 After a long lay-off. Larry Ripley (Yam) loaded up his bike and came out to DeA nza to find the 250 Pro competition was as close as ever . Danny Jean (SUl) . Steve Montague (Suz) and Bill Pelto were his main obstacles. In the first moto , it was Danny Jean all the way . Bill Pelto was close behind at the start while Montague and Ripley suffered from bad starts. Ripley moved up swiftly to fourth while Montague held sixth on the same lap. Jean was building up a tr emendous lead and by mid race . was way out of sight. Montague, in the meantim e , passed ' Ripl ey and went after second -place Pelt o. The Yamaha pilot held him off for a while, the n gave in on t he nint h lap. Montagu e however , crashed in less than one lap. returning the position to Pelto , -After that, the order remained the same; Jean, Pelto, Ripley , and Steve Feld (KTM) . In the closing laps , Jean's motor began to cough slightly, but he' still finished with most . of his lead intact. He changed plugs after the. race, hoping for an easy remedy. In the second round Jean . leading the pack through the first turn , gave ic all up in a crash at the bottom of DeAnza's big up -hill . He had to wait for every single rider to pass before he could . remount and get back in the race which left Steve Feld in the lead, followed closel y- b y Ripley and Montague. On lap four . Ripley moved into the lead and Pelto moved into third , displacing Montague, A short while later. Feld dropped out of the picture, leaving a three way battle for the top position. Jean was still out of contention in 11th place, but moving up rapidly. Halfway through the rnoto , -Mon tagu e pushed back into second and began pressuring Ripley: The two battled fender to fender for -the next few laps, Pelto was back in what he thought was a se!=ure third. but on the 11th lap Jean came out of nowhere to steal it away . The race was coming to a close and Jean knew that , he could clinch- the overall win if Montague got by Ripley to win the moto. With two laps to go , Montague did manage to pass Ripley and get into the lead but Ripl ey didn't give up . On th e fina l down -hill st ra igh t, j ust before th e finish line , Montague got slightly out of shape , a llowing Ripl ey to get by and secure t he overall win for himself.
