Ted Boody, Jr. . 2nd in National AMA points for 1978 W inner of the Harrington 'h mile and the Indianapolis mile. A winner all the way with Fury helmets. J Morgan Malocco ran well until he encountered a Cholla cactus. n Lawson had a two-bike cushion over third support rider Rich Hall . The course took a gradual left turn .. dumping the happy -folks into the wid e , sandwash that keeps Wheel Clinic and th e rest of the rim industry happy. This wash has more submerged rocks and stuff than you would care to th ink about. Staying in there for only a short time Dick Graham , Scott Atckison , Rick Edwards and John Lloyd of Riverton . Utah, found themselves crossing what appeared to be a giant vacant lot. Crossing this the course I headed for the e a st. end of Sage Mountain where the racers curiosity began to fester wondering by what means th e Invaders planned on getting them off of here. After about a mile of mountain top motocross, the question was answered as the racers turned left ..n and looked down the cobbiest downhill dynamite could create. Tl) Casting a few choice adjectives over o the top of their face guards, the n veteran racers .headed out over a few • rollers t hen picking uP ' a fire road _!lhead ing the hot thirsty racers towards, home and refreshments. J By this time Ogilvie was about a mile behind Larry as the 250 ace had '.been bulldogging a front flat clear around the second loop so the -only chance Bru ce had was if Larry developed some problems of his own. Larry did have a slipping clutch but .th at is a lot easier to live with than a flat. Rutten took a solid third now that Pettigrew'S rear tire was almost gone. Malocco developed a flat when he passed Pettigrew and overshot a turn putting him on a collision course with a Cholla cactus. Morgan pulled a •.wheelie and cleared the front but when . the rear hit the cactus, his bike was doing the hula just like Pettigrew's . Taking off on loop three was a long straight line in the direction of the red mountain. Shooting up the rocky face of the red mountain , Bruce Lewellyn , • Bob Powell of West Jordan, Utah, Gary Spainhower of San Jose and oRichard Carlson had that nice mess of red rocks waiting for them on the u -other side. Thinking this must be the worst of it the racers began bouncing in and out of a series of ravin es. Once J out of th is, Tim Fitzpatrick managed to ho ld off Dave Rogaczewski , Quickdraw McGraw and Rick Jones but before the loop was complete, Quickdraw wou ld be the only one of the trio operational. Clearing the crossgrain stuff, the course dropped onto the power line road . After a mile (Continued on page 46) , Gary Scott 3rd in National AMA points for 1978 W inner of the final Ascot IT Gary's choice? Evel Knievel's full-face helmet.
