Scott ran over his bike. Neither was
hurt . but both were out, Scott with a
broken sprocket incurred while
running over the other bike. Brow
burned his hand trying to put an
exhaust pipe back in the head.
Eklund flew pas t Coss in the infield
entrance on the third lap. Two laps
later he got Kidd over the jump,
putting him in second to sta y.
Occupying fifth through ninth at
the one -quarter mark were Terry
Dorsch, Bood y, Keene r , Springsteen
and Rick Hocking, though Hocking
passed Springsteen a lap later.
Scott and Eklund were busy
stretching som e d istance over the
pack. Coss set his sights on Kidd and
got him on th e second turn of lap' 10_
Things remained sta tic for the next
few laps , with the exception of
Springer gett ing by Keener and
Dorsch in one flu id move , and John
Hateley mo ving up on Springsteen's
ta il.

W ith only six laps to go , Goss
started slowing . With three laps left,
he pulled off. "T he gas line broke and
th e tank ran out on one side . It kept
running for awhile but it finall y ra n
ou t of gas ," said Goss.
The checkered flag fea tured Scott
wheeli eing his bike across the lin e with
a straightaway's lea d over Eklund.

demise a n d hel d it over Boody.
Hocking was fifth , only a few feet in
front of Springsteen. Hateley took
seventh in front of a never-really-in the-hunt Alex Jo rgensen, Dorsch and
Keener.
Scott was joined in the winner's
circle by sponsor Evel Knieve I. There
was celebration, jokes (" My helmet is
Evel Knievel little league approved,"
said Scott. " T ha t means it's bat
proofl" ) and cha ritable moments
(Kni evel said if Scott won the following
night'S ha lf mile , they would donate
the winner's purse to multiple
sclerosis .).
Later in the pits, re -crowned
National Champion . Springsteen,
said, "I've got so much to say that I'm
speechless. "

Trophy Race
Brad Hurst shot into the lead off the
line, and though Bill Schaeffers (BelRay/Tex Peel H ·D) nudged by
momentarily entering the infiel d,
Hurst dominated th e first eight laps.
Schaeffer dropped back, letting John
Cennai (Less Edwards/Cycle Imports
T ri), Lowell Moural (Tri) and Larry
Legarra (T ri) form a group to dic e for
second. When Hurst slid ou t in the
first turn on . lap nine, Gennai took
over and won , despite the shifting
problems that plagued him earlier in
the evening. Legarra was second and
Danny Hockie (Doughert y Co . H ·D)
finished third. Hurst picked himself
up and finished ninth.
25-lap N ational
Gary Scott, who had to replace worn
steering head bearings after his heat ,
trumpeted into the lead as soon as the
light hit green. Behind him as they
dashed into the infield were Hank
Scott and Randy Goss. Mike Kidd
moved into second before th e first lap
was over, with Coss , Steve Eklund ,
Brow and Hank Scott following. Brow
crashed on the second lap and Hank
