HONDA'S SMITH TAKES 1
Just two weeks into the 1978Trans-AMA ser ies, Marty Smith
took the overall victory at the tough Axton, Virginia eve nt. With
consistent 2-3 placings on a wet, slippery track Marty dazzled
over 7,000 enthusiastic spectators.
Smith and his Honda teammate Jim Pomeroy ran off with
the first moto. Jim led from th e start and was joined quickly by
Marty who started fourth. They were never reall y challenged '
and finished with a 20-second margin over third place.
The second moto saw Marty's powerful RC-400 factory
Elsinore 1M carry him right into the lead . But a minor spill slipped
Marty back into second. Needing only a third place to secur e th e
overall win for the day, Marty then was passed by teammate
Brad Lackey who charged ahead to battle for the lead . With his
overall win safely tucked away, Marty circulated around the track
in third until the end of the moto. '.
Motocross enthusiasts have seen many inconsistent, flashin-the-pan performers. And they know that the real secret to
winning is a bike and rider capable of fast, consistentperformances. The Honda Elsinores ana the Team Honda riders are
such combinations. They win a lot of motos, but as Marty and
his Honda prov ed at Axton, Virginia, when you're consistently
fast, you don't have to win th em all in order to win it all.
If you've got that kind of consistency as a rider, then you
want a machine t hat can deliver strong, steady performances.
