Keener took Springer for third coming ou t of turn four on lap two and then dropped Aldana a spot on the next go around. By lap five Keener had closed the ga p slightly on ' Brow while Springer was finding Hank Scot t on his rear wheel. One lap la ter Scott passed Springer in tu rn one a nd set his sights on Keener . By this point the field had strung ou t to figh t among themsel ves with Morehead a nd Boody going at it the hardest as if ninth pl ace were the lead. Actually Boody need ed an eighth place finish to ta ke second in th e standings while Morehead's chance of holding his 10th place standing if Brow won grew d immer wit h each passing lap. No sooner had Keener and Scott begun a battle for second than Keener was out with a dead magneto. Scott lasted to lap 14 when his engine blew , The two retirements moved Aldana up to third behind Springer and ahead of Hocking, Goss, Morehead. Jorgensen, and Boody. Eves, with oil leaking on his rear wheel . was slipping quickly backward. The top five spots were set from lap 15 on with Morehead crashing on lap 18 in tum on e and dropping to 11th place. Brow never backed off or looked back.
