Rid ing in the O ver the Hill class , these two proved th ey are anything but as they staged the race of the day. They seem ed totally unaware tha t the condi tions were any tougher than ' usual as they squirted mud, gassing their way over the course sideby-sid e off the jumps while reaching do wn grabbing gears and really going for it . Brown had ta ken the lead off t he start of the first moto but due to the fact that he chose not to ride practice , he found himself behind Stewart when he followed the course set up from th e previous race . Needless to say , Brown was pretty surprised when he looked up and saw Stewa rt in fro nt of him . Brown then worked his way back to within inches of Stewart's rear wheel and th e wh ite flag lap was a battle royal all th e way with the lead bei ng swapped back a nd forth but Stewart fin ally pu t it to Brown by less than a bike length a t the chec kered . Moto two was a repe at, Stewart first , Brow n seco nd. J im · Worrall (Mai) followed them in both motos for overall third spot. Proving his expertise under tough cond itions , Totem Cycle's Bla ine Elledge (H us) topped the 250 Expert class , winning both motos , Maicomounted Kirk Ingertila gave Elledge som e competition in the first go · around and th en grabbed the lead off the start of th e second mota but had to settle for second overall when Elledge got by him to stay until the flag . Third overall went to Jeff Birkesto l (Ya m) . Some real mud baths developed with the combining of the O pe n Expe rt a nd 125 Expert classes. Gary Elliott (Mai) put together two firsts for the overall O pen Expe rt win , Dale Ba rker (Yam) was second an d Ed Therriault (Yam) third . Rod Casper (Suz) d idn't let th e mu d slow him down mu ch . With the 125s sta rti ng severa l seco nds behi nd t he Open bikes. Casper made up lots of ground a nd moved out in front of everybody where he could show off his new green mud suit. His ba ck -to -ba ck wins ga ve him first overall with second going to Dou g Sm ith (Suz) a nd thi rd to Bob Dawson (Su z).
