Halford grabs ADRA Vulture i By John Ehrhart WICKENBURG , AZ, SEPT. 18 Jim Halford won his second race in a TOW by completing the 100 miles of the Third Annual Vul - ture in three hours, 36 seconds. Halford, starting from the last expert row in the timed race, took the lead in distance on the last la p by passing Dave Miller. Miller had taken the lead on the first lap and used his front-row starting position to stretch his lead in the dustless air out front. He still finished only 2:20 down from Halford. Halford had expected to be out front much sooner, by the third lap , but the dust slowed him . He still liked the course. "Excellent; definitely a challenge," he said after the race. He was impressed by a rider who hadn't raced for about six years . "Mark Draugel was the only one I raced with for any length of time . He stayed with me for two thirds or three quarters of a lap . Then he missed a corner and I motored by. I raced with him severa l years ago when I raced a 125, " said Halford . Draugel fin ish ed fourth overall. Another rider would have liked to trade places with Draugel since he was looking forward to a dice with Halford. Dave Crawford. best known for his motocross exploits as an expert in the Phoenix area , didn't get the chance to play . Ha lford passed Crawford while he was getting some gas . Then Crawford 's chain broke on the last lap. As a motocrosser, Crawford had some thoughts on desert racing before the race. "I've been wanting to do it for a long time. But I'm going to do something different for a motocrosser: cool it and not pla y like the other MXers and crash," he said, referring to stories he had heard of another motocrosser , Roger Jones, last year at the Snowflake race. Jones went for the lead right away , and th e resulting crashes event ually put him out with a broken gas tank . , Armed with this knowl ed ge and th e fac t that th er e wer e 4300 mineshafts waiting if on e got too wildl y off course , he took it easy th e first lap . " I was kind of worried , how do you know wher e to on the ground between Kawasaki's Gary La Plante and Honda's Mark Eggar.
