He just wanted entered his RM 125 in th e Open class. There were more entries in the big bore class and Carman figured th e racing would be better. Out of the hole in the first mota , Carman was, pred ictably, ou t-gunned and near-the back of the pack. O ut in from was Bill Pelto (Yam) and he looked as though he meant to stay there . Redland Suzuki's Dave O hl held down second place, ahead of Paul Sedl er (Hus) and Rick Lee , who was mo unted on a big Honda four -stroke. The race continued and Ca rma n slowly pushed his way to the fr ont of the pack. By the halfway mark, the screaming 125 had gotten around Ohl and was closing on Pelto. The Yamaha and Suzuki riders battled each other for the rest of the race. The 125 woul d have a clear adv antage in the turns, but the bigger machine's stability and power gave it the edge. Pelto crossed the finish line first and took the first mota win with Carman not far behind. In the second mota , it was Lee that jumped into the lead wit h Pelto right behind. Carman somehow managed to get a third place stan ahead of Ohl and Sedl er. By the second lap, Pelto Radica l Ron Turner lea~s Donnie Hansen in the first SSM 250 Pro moto. had - g ot te n around Lee and was building a comfortable lead. Carman followed the thumper · for five la ps before Lee dropped out of the race , giving away his position . In a few more laps , it looked just like the first mota . Carman would catch Pelt o in the turns , only to lose him on every thi ng else. Near the end of the race, Cannan dropped his pace, being satisfied with second place. Pelto went home with first ' place cash and Carman took second. Most of the riders had agreed ·to let the 125 run with them before hand , so there were no protests. O hl took third and Sed ler was fourth .
