SEPT. 25 Chris Mallory took the 250 Intermediates by storm with back-toback wins. There was som e su pe r tight racing between Spoor and Mallory for most of the mota until Mallory finally took over the lead and St. George moved int o th ird. Dave LaBrot (Yam-T ire Man) made a late charge into second. By the end of the moto, Spoor was still solid in third . The second time out. Spoor took charge off the line with Mallory right behind him . Finally Mallory moved o-n into the lead with Joe Johnson (YamSyclop's) holding down third . The Mallory-Spoor duel continued on into • the white flag lap and down to the wire with Mallory picking off the overall win , Spoor taking down second and third going to LaBrot. Willy Simons won the 125 Pro class win after a long and hard day of racing. In the first moto, Bob Kline took the lead with John O 'Mara (SUIAI Baker) right on his tail. Simons and Jim Cote were dueling for third. Kline opened up his led with O 'Mara and Simons right on top of each other. Simons finally passed O'Mara. Meanwhile , Kline was way out in front , smoking everyone! By the end of the moto, Kline sailed home in first. Simons in second and O 'Mara took down third. When the gate dropped for thesecond moto, Bob Ramsey charged off , the line with Kline right on his tail. On the back end of the track , Kline took over, pushing Ramsey back in second with Simons right behind him . Kline crashed in the back section on the next lap and Ramsey was back in the lead. Dave Vicioso had now moved into third . and ha g J im and ~jck .tI!ll.ej\l~t. itching for a chance to get by. Simons was closing fast on Ramsey and coming ' u p out of the sandwash , Simons took over the lead and started to put a little space between himself and the rest of the pack. Nick Hale. closing fast on Vicioso, moved into third . then into second with Tim Locey right behind him . When the winning checkered flag came out Simons coasted into the winner's circl e for to p money of the day. Nick Hale (4-2) took home second overall and third went to Locey . For the 500 Pros . Andy J annings came bac k from Friday nig ht's wins to take another vict ory . In the first m oto , jan nings (Yarn- Bill Krause) ope ned up a fai r lead . as Dave Potts and Je rry Asher d id some hea vy dueling for second . Jim Tassa no (Mai-Syclop's) ha d a ba ttle going for fou rth with Dea n Taylor a nd Bill Hagen . Down to the wire the battl e fo r seco nd continued with Potts holding d own seco nd and Ashe r conti nuing in third . T he seco nd tim e out . Jannings again took over control. Jim Tassan o was holding second until the back end of the track wh ere Monte McCoy (KT M-Mid- Valley) , closin g in fast , moved into second. Coming up fast on Jannings. McCoy sailed into th e lead. Jannings was staying in fairl y close to McCoy as a tight race for third took place between Bill Hagen and Steve Rawson. Heading into the white flag lap both Rawson and Tassano had moved on by Jannings and were out to catch McCoy. McCoy continued his lead right down to the end where he took the moto win . Jannings rode home the overall victor, with McCoy taking second overall, and third going to Potts. Results in Results Section. 'Over The HIli Gang Invades Indian Dunes By Bang Bang Bobo VALENCIA , CA. SEPT. 18 Over the Hill Gang experts (aged 30-40) were not hindered by the few new twists and turns which were added to the in ternation al track for CRC's full -day motocross event . The large turnout saw Lanky La rry (Yam) and Absurd AI (SUI) dueling for first overall . with th e final nod going to AI when , he . fin ished ahead of Larry in the tie- breaker second moto, Rathole Rocky (Yam) and Gorilla Gary (SUI) had their fans jumping as they diced for third place. Rocky took it in rnoto two ahead of Gary Cole, who had to settle for a fourth in a very close race. Amateurs shared the track with the experts, which made the race twice as exciting to watch . Kaptin Kirk (SUI) took his hot 'Zook at warp' speed for a first place. leaving Honky Herb to fight for second. Du Du Dan (Yam) diced with Delicate Dennis (Yam) in a daring drive to the checkers for third place. Intermediates. with 19 race-ready riders . was the largest class to go off the line. First place was won by a very much improved rider (m e). who went 2-2 in both motos. Nauseous Norm followed closel yjsometimes too close) to bring in the second place win . Steve Pobjoy ran it around to garner third place, followed by a solid 4·4 Scabby Skip on a Montesa for fourth overall. Flippin Fred (Mai) turned a 3·8 into 5th overall. Come-on-Chuck started out with a win in his first moto, but had trouble in the second. giving him a sixth overall. Exciting Novices were evident with sixteen anxious riders starting. Although Chiseler Chuck (Yam ) had the holeshot in the first moto , it was Decomposed Dan (Yam) who took first overall , going 3 -1 in his motos . Baboon Bob (SUI) was into the first turn ahead of the pack in the second rnoto but bobbled once, dropping him down two yposirions to finish with a second overall ahead of Droopy Dick (Yam) an d fourth place Chiseler Chuck. Invaders M.C. to host AMA Nat'l. cross-country contest By Joyce May The Invaders M.C. , working with the Headquarters of the American Motorcyclist Association, will be hosting the AMA National Championship Hare and Hound race on October 16. Invitations have already gone out to the top 20 amateurs and top 20 experts in each class in Districts 26 , 36 , 37, and 38 . Throughout the U.S.A. , each class steward in each District has also received an invitation to be extended to the eligible cross-country riders in their districts. A qualifier race was also held earlier this year in District 37, from which other eligibles qualified. This race will determine the number one cross -country rider in the U.S.A. The race will be held in Lucerne Valley and will contain three loops , approximately a total of 120 miles long. Although the entries were to close on October Ist , that date has now been extended to the actual race date as the invitations were so late in getting ou t . There will also be a "Support class" race in which any rider so desiring may enter, race, and earn a large finisher pin. AMA cards are required for the Support class . Besides regular trophies and pins going to the riders . the number one rider will receive a silver cup. No district points ",ill be earned .. however,
