Heavy on the Mayo INSIDE Trans-AMA This past February I saw a kid in the final of the Astrodome flat track that impressed me . I think he was the only one without a sponsor. He didn't come in the top ten, but it was very apparent he did no t have the equipment. , I saw th is kid again a few weeks ago In Baton Rouge. I want you to know it was beautiful the way he rode. If a sponsor is smart, they would pick this kid up . R.D .S. •• I am p retty b urned up at this time, so bea r with m e , Recently whi le at the CRC Team Race in Cali fornia Ci ty m y partner and I entered like everyone else with the hop e of rna ybe winning a tro phy. So I wai ted for m y Cycle News to see how we had don e. First of all you had a team th at ou r team had beaten by two m inu tes do wn as first in our class. So I ca lled CRC to find out what had happened. They to ld me there was a m ista ke and tha t we had won our class after all . , This is when the real scorcher cam e . CRC to ld me that th er e would be no ~rophy beca use th ere were not eno ugh In our class: There were two teams in our class . How much does a lous y trophy cost? Four rid ers at $12 apiece . Somebody 's making a lot of mon ey. I really started th inking wh y do we even to go t he races if th ey are goi ng to screw you out of th e gold? We d rove 200 miles, spe nt money on gas , food, drinks, trailer , not to m en tion the $ 12 ent ry fee . I just thin k it's getting pretty sad whe n all they talk abo ut is ge tting good tu rnou ts so as to let the BLM a nd everyone else know th at we care about a place to rid e , the n they tu rn arou nd and tell us no tro hpy because not enough in our class. I think it stinks. Therefore, I will not renew m y Cycle News su bsc ription for your sloppy resul ts and I will not join CRC at the en d of th e yea r , LEO N PRICE Visa lia. CA Standart procedu re is that five entries m ake a class. Perhaps you 'd have been happier t o ha ve been pla ced in another class with more entries, but th en you would n't have gotten class poin ts. Editor. Sanford screwed up It amazes m e th at a n in divi dual of Ru ss Sanfor d's stature could get his info rm at ion so scre wed up. I refe r you to Mr. Sa nford's " Poli tical Poop" co lumn in Cycle News Vol XIV : No. 36 : Sep t. 14, 1977. Mr. Sa n fo rd states that h e is " ind ign ant a bo ut bein g treat ed as a second -class citizen. " He co ntin ues, loggi ng operations, cha in saws, hikers , backp ac ke rs, etc. are still all owed . .. " He is co rrect exce p t for cli ain saw users. They are not all owed in Stage II Restricted areasl He also says " It appe ars th a t all trails are out , unless th ey ha ve such marki ngs , i.e, 33E22, 2 1S11 etc ." All trails have suc h ma rkings and all trails are closed u nder Sta ge II res trictions . He was leading people to think that if a tra il had a tra il number, it was open . No , no , .nol A tra il to be used by O.RV's in th e first place must be posted with an a ppropriate "O pen" sign. You must contact each forest for info on ORV tra ils. TELLIER Ph oenix , AZ I rid e two-storkes on both street and di rt , and 1 am co ncerned about a rumor 1 heard that , st a rt ing the first of ?ext year, th ere is a sm og law going Into effect on motorcycles. This of · co urs e will sto p th e im po rti ng of twostrokes. What bothers m e m or e is th at I also heard th at th e law will affect t he people who alre ady own two-strokes. Is the government sticking it to us aga in ? Please let me a n d the rest of the two -stroke riders know, because they certainly won 't. JOHN CHARICH South Pasadena, CA A cco rd ing t o A lan Isley of th e Motorcycle Industry Council, bik es manufactured aft er Ja n . I , 1978 will be lim ited to from five to 14 grams of hydrocarbon emissions by ord er of th e En ~ironm ~nt~l Prot ection Agency. This unll lim it new two -strok e engine size. Of -road bik es are exe m pt, but it f spe lls th e end of big enduro twost rokes. EPA has no plans to control pre-1978 motorcycle emissions, so yo u won 't be af ect ed as long as you own f your present tw o-stroke. Aft er 1980 a flat five grams limit will apply to all new motorcycl es, which is exp ected to reduce th e maximum two -stroke to about '17.scc unless a t echnological breakthrough happens. CalzJomia has passed a one g ram p er kilometer emission limit ef ec tive in 1982 , which, f unless amend ed, will .affect all two strokes and ma ny f our-strokes. Editor.
