David Rod rigu ez won the final m ot o and slipped int o second. In the Open Experts, AI Posey came ou t after riding the D·36 scrambles. AI ' ha s been in the top 10 there for some time. He dialed a ll the competition in for th e win . The race of the night was the 125 Experts. They ca me down to th e finish lin e three a breast. Mike Newman won but J erry Edie and Jim Vigi l wer e so close it was a photo fin ish . Blose, Berluti, Watson cinch MX regionals By Joyce May PRICE, UTAH ,SEPT. 17 AMA's Western Regional Amateur Qualifier motocross was held at the fairground at an elevation of over 5,500 feet , something many of the riders were not prepared for . The morning was very cold with th e skies covered by clouds. Snow was forecast for the surrounding mountains . The track looked like well- packed clay, but after the practice laps the surface started to break up and it then became very dusty. The course, about 2 \02 miles long, contained a very steep hill with the back side dropping awa y at about a 75° angle. It soon acquired the nick- name of "Spoke-bender Hill ." Going over it the riders started to shed spokes out of their front wheels. The first ra ce was for the 125 class with 28 riders. F irst place went to Chappy Blose ( A r iz) with Dana Waxham (Dist 36 ) taking second. . _ As soon as the track was watered October Warehouse Clearance d own th e 25 0' s took to t he tra ck . Turn-out for th is class was very light with only 13 riders ent ering . All en Berlut i (Dist 36) earned t he firs t spot. hono rs follo we d b y fe llow district rider, J ohn Minor. Open class also had a very small turn -out with only 17 riders making an appe arance. Chuck Pet tigrew moved int o th e second place spo t behind Pete Watson (U t a h), but a pro blem with bro ken spokes in his front wheel forced h im to. drop back. W a tso n too k first h onors, followed by Chip Howell (Dist 38) and W ayne Ma rt in (Dist 37). Bu tch Darling (Dist 37) took the ho leshot in the second mot o for the 125 class, but fell back to third with Blose once again winning . W axham m oved into the sec ond slot. Tim Welker (Dist 37) m oved h is wa y up from the m iddle of th e pack to fin ish th ird. Pettigrew took th e holeshot in the final m oto a nd retained the lead a ll the way to the checkered flag in t he open class competition. Mark Pantell won in the 125 Novices, taking both motos after a fantast ic d uel with you ng Dave Rodriquez. In th e final moto , th ese two rid ers rode side by sid e , passing and repassing each other. In the last two laps, Parnell was finally able to sh ake Rodriquez. Mark also won th e Trophy Dash . Jerry Wallgren had his work cu t out for him in the 250 Novices. After he crashed, Jerry . settled down for th e win . Gary Lyke rode hard as he led the pack but could not keep Wallgren , back. A small turnout of 100 and 125 Intermediates forced a combination of the two classes. There was a su per battle between Danny Clements and Mike Brown. Clements rode ha rd but ' was a little low on horsepower and th e win went to Brown . Wes Morrell, th e new 250 Exp ert was taking his KTM as close to th e fe nce as possibl e: He led th e first mot o , but killed h is mot or a nd Joey Schlag went on to win . But th e seco nd ' m oto was a complete victo ry for Morrell.
