Special awards are given to the winners of the Superm in is a n d 25 0 Expert classes . incl uding a large traveling tr ophy and a mo nogrammed jacket. T he race has a special meaning for loca l ride rs - club members won a ll of the.expe r t races and took second in three of the five even ts. All of these riders were on Mike Tingley Suzukis. In t he Super-mini class, T im Li ttl e ca me ou t on top of a three-way tie with a '-I fini sh . T he competition ca me from Barry Glascow's 2-2 fin ish a nd J ay Mintyala , carrying a 1-3 score. Little will keep the trophy for a year. An ot her trophy winner was Don T aurman , who swept th e 250 Expert class. His 2-2 finish held off a 3-1 score by Tom Pearson . Taurman overcame a poor sta rt in the first moto to move from 10th to second place. Gary Kuest made a fine ride after finishing the first moto with a course marker shoved up his sleeve . then coming back in the second moto to win. Scott Karr swept both 125 Expert motos, then took the overall in the 100 class as well with a 2-1 ride. Charlie Vasecka m ade things tough in the 100s, posting a 1-2 finish . Don bea t the 500s with a 2-1 ride, and also placed second in the 125 Experts. Dan Huls earned second overall in the 500 class and Ra ndy Kreiter ran third, both in the 125 and 500s. The O pen Begin ner class was won by Ca rl Peterson on a IT 175 Yamaha! Results in Resu lts Section. One for Ammex (Jones) and one for Carabela (Grbssi) in Mexico By Eduardo Leon Camargo SALTILLO , MEX , SEP T . 4 ." Is "Sugar Bear" Grossi riding His teammates were Carabela's own Walter Vecchi and Mexican star Luis Guzman. His rivals: Two time MX champion Gary Jones, California ace Vince "Hooker" Van Hook, Steve Wise . Terry Jones, and no less than six Mexican Islo-Ammex factory riders. First moto of the 250 class saw 32 riders and Texan Pete Tanner slings hot for the lead. Tex Tanner got it for five laps till the Bea r ate him . Jones also passed Tanner, b ut the Texan kept on pushing to take back the second place. Second rn oto was one of the most exciting races seen at the Premia Internacional de to A mistad, Jones, Grossi, and Tanner sto le the lead for the who le moto 10 th e crowd's delight. After some heart-stopping mo ments it .was Grossi first to the flag, Jones, a nd Tanner following no more than 10 yards apart . Open Expert was a Grossi /jones affair with some catch-the-leaders play by Kasson team J ack Hicks and Bill Kasson himself. Penton-mounted Pete Tanner W'ed but recovered to grab a fourth. Grossi rode the 250 because he felt the 370 was a little 100 heavy , but he managed 10 stay and fight with the open bikes . Jack Hicks pushed the leaders in both motos, showing unusual style and the crowd-pleasing determination that he needed to grab a third. Jones' style and experience rewarded him and his dad's designed bike a first overall. " The 125 Class can be reduced 10 one name: Steve Wise. The McAllen , Texas rider rode a semi-works Honda two times to the win . His only opposition came from Californian Vince Van Hook, and Mexican Raul Gutierrez, who tried hard but they were unable to catch the elusive Elsie , rider. Open Amateur featured several duels , but when the dust had settled, it was Penton rider Jim Amos from Ciudad J uarez, Jose de Jes us Delgado from Guadalajara , and Adolfo Barquin from Mexico City in that order. As usual , all of the 135 American riders on hand were at the Mexican party the night before the races. Everybody had fun , and riders and fans were impressed by the show put on by the organizers, Moto Club Saltillo, as well as the fine effort by national manufacturers Ammex-Islo and Carabela, whose bikes looked really competitive with any other racing iron. A good tip: take a look at those bikes - they're fast . Blose and Logston war at Star Track By E. Wright EL PASO . TX , SEP T . 10 T here were a lot of new faces at Star Track's Satu rday night motocross. T here were riders fro m Albuque rque, Ph oenix, and New Mexico's Scott Logston making his m o toc ross com eb a ck ( afte r t wo months and two inju ries) wit h help fr o m a n ew sp onsor , FMF in California . First expert ra ce of the night was the 250s . P aul W ilson (Ya m), Albuquerque, took the lea d on the first la p a nd sta rt ed stretching it ou t. Back in the pa ck Ma by McIntyre (Ya m) centerpunched Logston and bo th went down in the m iddle of a tu m . Still no love lost betw een th ose two. Logston retired his 250 for the night. Wilson threw a chain on the last lap and Cha p py Blose (Ya m) won the moto, The second moto was a twoman race between Chappy and Maby. Maby grabbed the lead but Chap py was. hot and passed Maby and put a little distance on him. They left the pack in the dust,. In the Open Expert, Logston (Yam) got the holeshot and led for two laps , then McIntyre passe d him fair and square. Logston held on and when Mclntyre's bike broke, too k the lead back for the win , with Bo Jones (Ya m) a distant second. Second moto, a fast Steve La Point on a new Suzuk i, took the lead with Logston hot on his tail, Logston got by halfway through the race. La Point retir ed with a foot inj ury tha t was bot her ing him . Paul Wi lson (Yam) mo ved up to challenge Logston bu t Logston kicked it u p a gear and went on to win. In 125 Expert, Logston p ushed his FMF Yamaha in to the lead with Cha ppy Blose (Yam) right on his re ar . They diced the whole moto with Logston taking the win and Steve La Point (Suz) a distant third. Blose led the second moto all the way with a good cushion on Logston while LaPoint put a last effort charge 10_ bring him within striking distance of Logston , but not quite enough, and settled for third. Results in Results Section. Blose Bros. dominate Las (motol Cruces ByE. Wright LAS CRUCES, NM , SEPT. 11 Scott Logston (Yam) grabbed the lead in front of the home town crowd for the first O pen Exp ert moto. Logston had been injured the previous month at this track . Bob Blose (Yam) of Phoenix was close behind. O n the second lap Logston's goggles fell apart and he ha d to let Blose by. That's the way they finished. Blose led the second moto from sta rt to finish with Logston putting in a last minute charge to finish seco nd with J ames Fastle (Pen) ' of Albuquerque third . Biggest class of the day was the 250 Expert. Dennis Patton (Pen) led the first moto until the halfway mark when Pete Tanner (Pen) took over and went on to win. Bob Blose (Yam) worked his way up from the back of the pack and passed for second when Patton missed a gear near the finish line. Bob is also making a comeback after seriously injuring his knee. an d every race he gets faster. Chappy Blose (Yam) demolished the second moto after a poor showing in the first. T ann er took second with Bob Blose, again working his way up fro m a poo r start to take third . In the 125 Expert Chappy Blose (Yam) went fro m start to finish in first with Logston (Yam) close behind . Eddie Ca hill (Ya m) of Alb uquerque finished a half lap behind in third. Logston took the start of the second moto to th e delight of the crowd, with Chappy r ig ht be h in d . H alfway through the moto Logston m issed a shift a nd as he sai d later , "yo u don 't make any m ist akes wit h Ch ap py on your tail."
