As the first 250 Pro race rounded the first turn, Mark Hilton (Suz) was the leader with a group of riders in second. Hilton got out of shape and came down the other side behind the "grou p ." Mike Hersman (H us) was already stretching ou t a lead. Darrell Shultz (O ss) was second followed by Phil Douglas (Mai), Jerome Heiberger (Mai) and Paul Turner (Suz~ . .Hilton made it back to fifth before sliding out to avoid a dive into the gully at the end of the lap. Douglas and Shultz had a good race going before Shultz crashed and dropped back to sixth. Hersman was long gone out front. Heiberger outrode Douglas to obtain second. and Dan Turner and then Shultz got by Paul Turner. Heiberger closed the gap to first by quite a lot, but didn't have time to take over fro m He rsman befo re the checkered flag . Da n T u rner moved u p on Douglas and was gassin' to get by on the last turn . Bot? n e~rl y went down just before the finis h line, but managed to stay up with Dou glas crossing, ahead of Turner by a couple feet. Cantaloupi had a better start in the second moto (he had worked from 20th to seventh the first time ou t) and wasted no time getting around Hersman and Hilton in the first lap. Douglas and Heiberger passed Hilton. Hersman was the next target for the "dynamic duo" but they didn't get the chance to fight it out with him. He crashed and came up behind them. Heiberger was chasing Cantaloupi and Douglas had Hersman to contend with. At the finish, Hersman still had enough of a margin to coast in; Heiberger took an easy second. Hersman and Doug las were still dicing, but Hersm an had the third. Dan Turner was a safe distance ahead of Hilton for the fifth. Heiberger's 2·2 tally gave hi m t he overall win . Hersman was second and Dou glas th ird ; addi tional mo ney goi ng to Ca ntaloupi. Dan Turner a nd Pau l T u rner. Shultz and Heiberger ha d a not her chance to d uel in t he Open cla ss. Shu ltz th is tim e on a Bultaco, fared better 'than in the 250 class , rakingthe overall win . Hei berger didn't m ake out qu ite as well, only picking up second place money. and Douglas en ded up with the same, a third overall. Results in Results Section. Cycleland action continues By Patty Piston CHICO , CA. SEPT. 10 The race for money gets more hectic as the end of the season draws near. This session's holeshot went to Jeff Fowler, who hung onto the lead till Lowell Moural , Jim Hubbard and Ken Gray zapped it to Fowler in that order. The position swapping continued int o the fifth lap. Gray still held first , Hubbard second but Fowler got by Moural to take over th ird. He hung on to third 'until th e eighth la p when Mou ral snatched it back. At the checkered it was Gray, Hubbard, Moural and Fowler. George Irwi n's spill on the back straight in the second lap of the 125 J u nior main forced a re~tart , Ch~ck Atkinson, J oey Jaconetu and Keith W illiams held their 1·2 -3 positions on the staggered restart . Irwin , still having p rob lems staying upright , downed it again going into the fourth turn . Meanwhile the race for first continued. The pressure finall y got to Atkinson in the fourth lap and he bit the dust leaving Jaconetti and Williams to finish one and two. Results in Results Section . Pervier undefeated in 360s at Santa RosaST By Carol laBarre & Bob Tarnai SAN TA ROS A, CA, SEPT. 10 Fenn Pervier rem ained undefeated by staying a head of a ha rd charging Cha rles Gondo la in the 360 Expert class at the Santa Rosa semi-pro short track , Brian Koga and Ed Hausman kep t t he crowd going with an argu me nt over third place that left Koga a few bucks richer. Brian j ust got ou t of his cast and rea lly got a work out tonight. His TT500 was pitt ed against a Hond a Odyssey at half tim e and we foun d out what we knew all along. Two wheels . are better than four. T he 5QO main was a .Gary ,Leach Pete Watson (351and Scott Statem finished the second Open Expert mota in a bike-locked crash that saw Statem's front wheel six inches ahead at the line. affair with Rodney Avillo and Rick Nelson following . The 360 Juniors saw Bob Tomai trying hard to p ut Kent McConnell behind him but falling short at the checkers. . John Schaffer seems to know his way around the novice track with another 360 win over Kelly Bennett and Troy Geilfuss . Todd Skov looked very comfortable winning his first expert main when it counted (in dollars). Pervier was a wide open second and Bob Boyer showed up again in the winner's circle with the show money. Bill McDonnell kept ahead of the action in the 250 Junior Main in the form of Ricky Kerrigan . Rob Spencer rode to third a head of inspired Ron Witaker. Gregg Miller polished off the 250 Novice class bu t a tight fig ht fo r second went to Tony D. (Dea thridge that is) , with Dana Fle tc he r close behind. ' Tom Castaganola , Jr. handed a 200 Novice trophy to his dad, Tom, Sr. , when his fuel line came adrift. It was "Feet Up" Dominic Salazar looki~g like a scaled-down Ken ny Roberts m the 125 class. If this kid gets any bett er they 're goi ng to give him a number on his plate instea d of just a l e tt~ r. Dwayne Larroche and Steve Berrira carried the fight for second across the line with Dwayne edging Steve out. Steve Hammerich made his third 100 Mini ride a winner over Todd Morita. Morita didn't fare as well in the 80 class when he grabbed a little too much and rode his Yamaha upside down for a short distance. Dann y McDonnell had no tro ubles and too k home the brass. Results in Resu lts Section. Siamese finish at CMCnightMX By Roger Glazier SALT LAKE CITY , UT , SEPT. 9 It was no average, run of the mill CMC night MX a t Bonneville Racewa y. Eldon Cop ier recently returned from Texas where he was on tour and had his $2500 RM250 stolen, but found a 125 to compete and was wanting the win bad. Da n Letchinbrg found out just how ba d Eldon wanted it in m oto one when Copier repeatedly attempted hairy passes on comers, straights, ju mps , sweepers. Letchinberg narrowly escaped with a first by a shy three or four feet. Rou nd two was practically the same, with Kelly Skeen pulling a strong third. Copier's last chance ca~e in the final moto when Danny L, while in first coming off the wide rig ht hand sweeper, found a new way to take the Tooele Suzuki jump - sideways :putting him at the back of the ~a ck with five laps to go. He moved mto thi rd place after some serious handlebar knocking, ending wit h Copier first. Skeen seco nd . In the 250 Pro class nothing was spa red as Maico-rnou nted D ave Mec ha m saw red p ulling off the line behind Ke nny Archiba ld. For six straight laps Mech am was on Kenny's tai l attempting to pass several times, but fell short in th e st raights until th e next comer, where he'd again close in and do it all over again. At the finish it was Archibald a bike length in fro nt, followed by a frustrated Mecham with Fritz Hamerly third . The crowd began to sh out "Mecham" and "Archibaldl" as the gate dropped on moto two . Again Archibald emerged first and Mecham seemed tied to his tail. But not for long. After a few close calls resulting in both almost spilling, Mecha m tucked inside and drove past Kenny just in time for tum one and the finish , leaving a lot of spectators, includi ng the announcer, stammering and tongue-tied. In round three one could tell wha t was a t st ake for Archibald and Mecham. They were easily ahead of the rest a nd ru n ning WF O for some good air over Tooele Suzuki j ump . Edgi ng to the fr ont was Arc hiba ld , but lea ving no 'space between himself and Mecham until th e last la p (rnebbe he planned it th is way) and Dave nosed his AW2 50 in front of Kenny's 'Zook, almost causing him to highs ide . In the frenzy Archibald pushed too hard on the sweeper, po wer slidi ng out, bu t re mou n ting in ti me to hold onto second with Fritz H arnerli taking thi rd overall. T he sta ge was set for the Open Pros .
