Finally Nicol moved on by Root , leaving the battle to Root and Dixon. These two fought right down to the wire; Haugh crossed over in first . Evan . back after an absence from racing. took second and Nicol third. The second time around, Marcus and Jannings battled for the lead off the line with Haugh a close third. Haugh went down in the gully and Nicol took over third . Marcus scored the win . making a fantastic comeback. Nicol took second overall andJannings got third . Marcus came back in the 125 Pro class to another sweet v ictory, He ·took the lead with John O'Mara in second. Bob Ra m sey ran third with Kirk Stu rgeon in fo urth. R am sey p u lled off with some trouble with the rear wheel , moving Bob Kline into fourth. Sturgeon and Kline went side by side and O'Mara moved right beside Marcus , challenging hard . Coming along the sandwash , Marcus slowed a bit. Over the rabbit jumps, Marcus , O 'Mara , and Sturgeon were all taking th e jumps three abreast. Kline went down heading into the final turn, lea ving third open to Sturgeon. O'Mara got by Marcus for the win. Second time out. Marcus took over the lead with Shore in second , Sturgeon third and Edwin Arnet in fourth . Marcus opened his lead with Shore and Sturgeon battl ing for second. Arnet put the heat on Shore , but had to settle for third. Shore took home second place loot overall. and th ird went to Sturgeon . Andy Jannings took the 500 Pros overa ll win after fighting all evening with Jerry Asher and Jeff Stubblefield. Results in Results Section. SEPT. 17 If you're a guy with a strong ego who thinks beating the local women is easy fun, don 't get those hopes up too high if you stumble onto the track of a Women's Pro race. At the Saddleback Saturday Motocross, a lot of guys found out the hard wa y that the chicks are quick . When the gate dropped to let loose the first run of women, young Dee Dee Cates grabbed a holeshot up the start hill. A missed shift set her back behind the quick Johanna Stenersen. Back in third place, Honda queen Barbara Spielman wa s pulling up to the leaders , but on lap seven the suspension on her machine went, and the rear-end hop sent the young lady down and out of the race, with a fall on the hand she earlier broke. J oha n na had the Yamaha-mounted Miss Cates right on her tail for the entire race. No more than 10 feet separated the two for nine laps. T hen on the tight turn in front of the scorers' shack. too m u ch enthusiasm with th e wrist sent Miss Stenersen on her bac k. Her fa ll left the lead wide o pen for Dee Dee, who spent the rest of the mota stretching it out. The two were scored separately, Cates on a 250 and Johanna on a 125 , and each took their class win . Rhe Helms took the 125 second. and Cherry Stockton the deuce-and-a -half two slot.
