Barbra Spielman had her Honda slip out from u nder her on la p four but she remounted unhurt and , with a bit of bike su rgery (a dislocated front brake cable), she was able to finish fifth . J ohn Ulrich took third on th e Yoshim u ra 940cc GS-750 that McL au gh lin rod e to victory in the Superbike Produ ct ion race a t Laguna Seca a week ea rlier.: Ulrich was testing th e bike for Cycle m agazin e. a nd wound up in a match race against Ke it h Code on Reg Pridm ore's Racecrafters Z·1 (t hird at Laguna ·Seca). Ulrich turned a 2:19 lap (82 mph) from a standing start, with Code only inches behind him . John's final lap at 84 mph around Ontario's trickv 20 -turn, 3.19 ·mile road course proved superfluous. as Code's motor went south when a main jet came loose. Ulrich also won the Four-Stroke Grand Prix , with Dennis Smith second on another 750 Suzuki. John eventually got his lap times to within two seconds of Prid more's class record. Mike Baed er got off the line first in the 250 GP race, wit h Ron Hlavka, Bob Hyma n . J ohn Glo ver , a nd John Gidney snapp ing at his heels. As Baed er struck trouble, Hyman ca me up to challenge Hl avka for the lead , onl y to ha ve his frame br eak nea r the swingarm. Bob barely held off Glover at th e flag for second place. W ith a Hl-second lea d m idwa y through the race, Pat Beacom (Kaw) appeared to have th e 750 ·0pen Prod uction ra ce sewn up , but he fell by the wayside with a couple laps left. giving th e win to Willi Sch effer (H a n ). Meanwhil e . Ed T oomey, Bryan Cathey, and SCali Clough were d icin g back and fort h for the 500 class lead on their RD ·350s, wit h the decision going 10 Toomey a t th e flag , Until the 125 Production race Wally Karpynec must have felt fa te really had it in for him . In the 250 Production race. W all y (Suz) a nd Mike Fleming (Yam) collided in tu rn six while dicing for the lead on the third lap. Wally bit the dust, and though he got going again he wasn 't able to work his way back in to the top three . Then his Yamaha seized on the first lap of the 250 G P. Bu t in the 125 race, Wally (DKW) slipped ahead of Steve Sheftel (125 Hon) to take second place overall, behind 200 Prod uction winner Tom Ba lla n tyne (Yam). In other lightweight action P hilip p e DeLespinary (Morbidelli) won the 125 GP . and Tim Steinberger (Yam) took the 200 G P. when Jon Sio bom's leading Su zuki coasted to a sto p with a seized mo tor. SEPT. 16 125 Beginners were almost as exciting as the pros , Don Cassel won after two fast and furious motos, In the first mota , on a restart. Jim Dye (Su z) rook over th e lead. Larry Neston ran a strong second until p roblems d eveloped with his bike. T erry Burk took over second with a battle supreme taking place behind him among Monte Bridges, Bob Gillmore , and Ra ndy Owen. Cassel and Bu rk fought right down to the wire for second. Bu rk al most took over but ran out of time . At the end. Dye was solidly in the lead. Cassel in second and Bu rk maintained thi rd . Seco nd time off the line. Cassel led with Dye right on top of him in second. Paul Griego was ho ldi ng dow n third . Cassel and Dye dueled heavily for the lead do wn to the wire. with Cassel taking to p honors in th e class. Dye took second over all a nd . th ird to Burk. Evan Marcus began a winning strea k for himself by taking the overall win for th e 250.Pros. then returning to sweep th e 125 Pro class. At the 250 ' sta rt, Dave Haugh took control with Marcus challenging. Joe Root was running third . A battle for fourth was ta king place amo ng Dou g Nico l. Don Dixon . and Andy Jan nings. H au gh was pulli ng Ma rcus in the tu rns and Nicol was on top of Root in their wild ba ttle for th ird .
