Hollister Hills plans published FAMOUS- ' Preliminary plans for future use and development of the 3347acre Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area in San Benito County are now available for public inspection, California Parks and Recreation Director Russell Cahill announced September 13. Interested citizens may see the plans at the Recreation Area office , eight miles south of Hollister on Cienega Road, at the Gabilan Mountains office in San Juan Bautista, at the District Office at 2211 Garden Road , Monterey , at all other state park district offices, and at the Distribution Center of the State Department of Parks and Recreation, 1416 Ninth Street, Sacramento, CA. Cahill noted' that this is the first state-operated vehicular recreation , area funded fr om, the special "green sticker" registration fees paid by offroa d-vehicle own ers. , "While the darkening energy picture has caused me to express some doubt as to the long-range future of this kind of recreation, I feel the state has made a commitment to this and other projects, a commitment I intend to carry out," Cahill said. ' Plans call for continuing the existing off-road vehicle facilities , which include 2 ,200 acres devoted exclusively to off-road motorcycle riding. with nearly 85 miles of trails, nine hillclimbs , and four motorcycle ~ tracks, The facilities also include 867 acres for competitive or club events for motorcycles or four-wheeled vehicles , and an obstacle course for four wheeled vehicles. Camping and picn ic facilities include 125 family ,campsites. a group camp that will accommodate 60 persons , 25 family picnic sites. and a group picnic area that will accommodate 200 persons. Cahill said additional rest rooms will be built. and improvements are • planned for concession facilities . 1\ ,T he report recommends that an old , schoolhouse ,in the area be converted n to a meeting hall for clubs and other groups . 5 Plans include a display center that would feature earthquake monitoring equipment. The Hollister area is the most active ' earthquake area in California. "H ollister Hills will continue to be essentially a no-frills, off-road veh icle area ." Cahill said , " wit h minimum facilities. Most of the recreation area will be kept in its present condition , and efforts will be made to prevent deterioration of the terrain. The main effort will be to provide for safe and efficient use of the area by motorcycles and four-wheel -drive vehicles," Some of the improvements suggested during the public planning meetings have already been put into effect , such , as better placement of one-way signs to minimize the chances of head-on collisions by motorcycles, and a motocross track. The planning report recommends acquisition of land to connect the "Upper Ranch" and the "Lower Ranch," which are now completely separated. The "L ower Ranch is primarily a -general-use motorcycle park, and the Upper Ranch is used by motorcyclists and drivers of four wheel-drive vehicles on alternate weekends by reservation , Fu r t h e r information m ay b e o btained from the Hollister Hills Planning Team.
